PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Peppermint Smoothie™ Althea, scientifically known as Hibiscus syriacus ‘DS04PS’, is a stunning flowering shrub known for its large, ruffled blooms in shades of pink and white with a striking red eye. This hardy Rose of Sharon variety produces abundant tropical-looking flowers from mid-summer through fall, adding vibrant color to the landscape when many other shrubs have finished blooming. With its upright growth and long blooming season, Peppermint Smoothie™ Althea is a beautiful choice for hedges, garden borders, and focal plantings.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Typically grows 1–2 feet per year and reaches 8–10 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season to help establish roots. Once established, Peppermint Smoothie™ Althea is moderately drought tolerant and generally only needs watering during extended dry periods. Watering needs will vary depending on soil conditions, rainfall, climate, and growing zone.

Peppermint Smoothie™ Althea grows best in full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily, which promotes abundant flowering and strong growth.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune Peppermint Smoothie™ Althea in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Because it blooms on new wood, pruning can help maintain shape and encourage vigorous flowering.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer for flowering shrubs in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant blooms throughout the summer. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Peppermint Smoothie™ Althea is very cold hardy and typically requires no special winter protection within its recommended growing zones. Mulching around the base can help protect roots and conserve soil moisture.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun to partial sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and about the same depth as the container so the plant sits at the same level it was growing in the nursery pot. Place the shrub in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch slightly away from the stems.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

Peppermint Smoothie™ Althea thrives in USDA Zones 5–9 and is well adapted to a wide range of climates across the United States. This hardy Rose of Sharon tolerates hot summers and cold winters and performs best in sunny locations with well-draining soil. In warmer climates, the plant produces an extended bloom season, while in cooler regions it remains a reliable late-season flowering shrub.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
