PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Hetz Midget Arborvitae, botanically known as Thuja occidentalis ‘Hetz Midget’, is a compact evergreen shrub valued for its naturally rounded shape and dense green foliage. This slow-growing arborvitae forms a tidy globe without the need for frequent pruning, making it an excellent choice for foundation plantings, borders, and small garden spaces. Its year-round color and low-maintenance nature make it a reliable evergreen for many landscape styles.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Slow growth rate; typically reaches 3–4 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, water when the soil begins to dry, typically every 7–10 days depending on your local climate and weather. Check soil moisture before watering again to avoid overly wet soil, which arborvitae do not tolerate well. Hetz Midget Arborvitae grows best in full sun but also tolerates partial shade. Adequate sunlight helps maintain dense foliage and a compact shape.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Hetz Midget Arborvitae needs very little pruning. If shaping is desired, lightly prune in late winter or early spring to maintain its compact, rounded form. Remove any dead or damaged branches as needed.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and dense foliage. Established plants typically need minimal feeding. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Hetz Midget Arborvitae is cold-hardy in its growing zones and generally requires no special winter protection. In colder or windy areas, mulching around the base can help protect the roots and reduce winter stress.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Select a well-draining location with either full sun or partial shade exposure. When planting, dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball, position the shrub, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Whether in a garden bed or a container, ensure proper soil drainage.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 3-8

Hetz Midget Arborvitae thrives in cooler climates and is highly cold-hardy, making it well suited for northern landscapes. It performs best in regions with moderate summers and cold winters but adapts well to a variety of soil types as long as the soil is well-drained. This hardy evergreen is commonly used in residential landscapes throughout much of the United States due to its compact size and dependable year-round foliage.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
