PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

With the Giant Spotted Ligularia, expect an impressive display of large, glossy leaves adorned with vibrant yellow spots, creating a dramatic visual appeal. In late summer to early fall, be prepared for the emergence of tall stems bearing clusters of cheerful yellow flowers, adding a burst of color to shaded areas. This plant thrives in moist, shady environments, bringing texture and interest to gardens, woodland settings, or containers. The Giant Spotted Ligularia is a robust and visually captivating plant and a delight to all who encounter it.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; reaches a mature height and width of 2 to 3 feet.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

The Giant Spotted Ligularia thrives in partial to full shade, as direct sunlight can scorch its leaves. It requires consistently moist soil to thrive, so watering should be regular and thorough. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged, throughout the growing season. Monitor the moisture levels and adjust watering frequency as needed, ensuring the soil remains moist without becoming saturated.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Giant Spotted Ligularia requires minimal pruning. Remove dead or damaged leaves as needed and cut back old flower stalks in early spring to encourage new growth.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring, following package instructions, and distribute evenly around the root zone. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In zones 7–9, mulch around the base to insulate roots. In colder regions, cover with burlap or a frost cloth during harsh winter conditions.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

When planting the Giant Spotted Ligularia (Farfugium japonicum), select a location that receives partial to full shade, as direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. The soil should be rich, moist, and well-draining to support optimal growth. Dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball, ensuring the plant will be at the same depth as it was in its nursery container. Place the Ligularia in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm it around the roots. Water thoroughly after planting and provide a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to conserve moisture and suppress weed growth.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 7-10

The Giant Spotted Ligularia typically thrives in USDA hardiness zones 7-10. It exhibits good hardiness and can tolerate a range of conditions, including heat and humidity. However, it may require extra protection in colder regions to safeguard it from freezing temperatures.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
