PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Edward Goucher Abelia, botanically known as Abelia × grandiflora ‘Edward Goucher’, is a compact flowering shrub valued for its graceful arching branches, glossy green foliage, and long season of pink blooms. This semi-evergreen shrub produces clusters of lavender-pink tubular flowers from summer through fall, attracting pollinators and adding soft color to landscape beds and borders. Its easy care and long blooming period make it a popular choice for foundation plantings and informal hedges.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; typically reaches 3–5 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, water when the soil begins to dry, typically every 7–10 days depending on your local climate and weather. Edward Goucher Abelia blooms best in full sun but also grows well in partial shade. Adequate sunlight encourages more abundant flowering and fuller growth.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
This shrub blooms on new growth, so pruning can be done in late winter or early spring to shape the plant or remove dead branches.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy foliage and flowering. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In colder areas, the plant may lose leaves in winter but will regrow in spring. Applying mulch around the base can help protect roots from temperature fluctuations.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and about the same depth. Place the shrub so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with soil and water thoroughly to settle the roots. Add a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the stem.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 6-9

Edward Goucher Abelia grows well in temperate climates with warm summers and mild winters. It performs best in USDA Zones 6–9 and adapts to a variety of soil types as long as the soil drains well. In warmer regions the shrub may remain semi-evergreen, while in cooler climates it can lose some or all of its leaves during winter dormancy. Full sun encourages the best flowering, although the plant can tolerate partial shade.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
