PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Dakota Pinnacle® Birch, scientifically known as Betula platyphylla ‘Fargo’, is a striking ornamental birch tree prized for its narrow upright form and bright white bark. This cold-hardy deciduous tree offers a clean, vertical silhouette that works beautifully in smaller landscapes, along driveways, or as a focal point in garden beds. Its dark green leaves turn a vibrant yellow in fall, adding seasonal color and visual interest to the landscape.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Typically grows about 1–2 feet per year and reaches 25–30 feet tall and 8–10 feet wide at maturity, forming a slender columnar shape.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply about once or twice per week during the first growing season to help establish the root system. Birch trees prefer consistently moist soil, though they should not sit in standing water. Watering needs will vary depending on soil type, rainfall, temperature, and local climate conditions.

Dakota Pinnacle® Birch grows best in full sun, though it can tolerate partial sun. Adequate sunlight encourages strong growth and vibrant fall color.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune Dakota Pinnacle® Birch in late fall or winter when the tree is dormant. Avoid pruning in early spring when sap flow is heavy. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain the tree’s structure.

FERTILIZING:
Birch trees generally do not require frequent fertilization. If soil is poor, apply a balanced slow-release tree fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Dakota Pinnacle® Birch is highly cold hardy and usually requires no winter protection within its recommended growing zones. Applying mulch around the base of young trees can help regulate soil moisture and temperature.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting site with full sun to partial sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the nursery container so the tree sits at the same level it was previously growing. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base of the tree to help conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 3-7

Dakota Pinnacle® Birch thrives in USDA Zones 3–7 and is well suited to colder northern climates. This birch variety was developed for improved cold hardiness and performs well in regions with harsh winters. It grows best in full sun with consistent moisture and well-draining soil. In warmer climates within its range, providing adequate moisture and some afternoon shade can help maintain tree health.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
