PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Citronella Geranium, scientifically known as Pelargonium ‘Citrosum’, is a fragrant ornamental plant known for its deeply cut green foliage and fresh citrus-like scent. Commonly called the “mosquito plant,” this geranium adds texture, fragrance, and seasonal color to patios, containers, and garden beds. With its soft lavender-pink blooms and aromatic foliage, Citronella Geranium is a popular warm-season plant for outdoor living spaces.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast growth rate. Citronella Geranium typically grows 1–2 feet per year and reaches 2–4 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water when the soil begins to dry, allowing the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between watering. Typically water once or twice per week, though watering frequency will vary depending on temperature, container size, sunlight exposure, and rainfall. Avoid overly soggy soil.

Citronella Geranium grows best in full sun to partial sun, with more sunlight encouraging fuller growth and blooming.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Pinch or lightly prune throughout the growing season to encourage fuller, bushier growth. Remove spent blooms and leggy stems as needed to maintain appearance.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season to support healthy foliage and blooming. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Citronella Geranium is sensitive to frost and should be protected from freezing temperatures. In cooler climates, bring containers indoors before temperatures drop below 40°F.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun to partial sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth as the container. Place the plant in the hole, backfill gently, and water thoroughly after planting. If planting in containers, ensure pots have proper drainage holes to prevent overly wet soil.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 9-11

Citronella Geranium grows best in USDA Zones 9–11 and thrives in warm, sunny climates with good airflow and well-draining soil. In cooler climates, it is commonly grown as a seasonal patio plant or overwintered indoors. This plant performs especially well in containers, raised beds, and outdoor seating areas.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
