PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The American Beautyberry, scientifically known as Callicarpa americana, is a fast-growing native shrub celebrated for its vibrant clusters of bright purple berries that appear in fall. This deciduous shrub brings seasonal color, wildlife interest, and a natural woodland feel to landscapes and gardens. American Beautyberry is especially valued for attracting birds and pollinators while thriving in a wide range of growing conditions with minimal maintenance.

SEASONAL DORMANCY
Perennial plants may arrive cut back or dormant depending on the season. It is normal for early spring shipments to have minimal foliage or only stems. Once planted, new growth will emerge as the plant enters its active growing season.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast-growing deciduous shrub. Typically reaches approximately 3-6 feet tall and 3-6 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water when the top few inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. American Beautyberry is moderately drought tolerant once mature but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

American Beautyberry grows best in full sun to partial shade. Plants grown in sunnier locations often produce heavier berry displays and denser growth.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune American Beautyberry in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth and increase berry production. Cutting back to 12–18 inches can promote a denser shrub with more berries.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In cooler climates, mulch around the base to protect roots from extreme cold.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and plant so the top of the rootball sits level with the surrounding soil grade. Backfill with native soil, water deeply after planting, and apply mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature while keeping mulch slightly away from the stems.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 6-10

American Beautyberry thrives in warm and temperate climates with moderate humidity and seasonal rainfall. It performs especially well in woodland gardens, native plant landscapes, and naturalized areas throughout the southern and eastern United States. This adaptable native shrub tolerates summer heat and humidity while also handling occasional cold temperatures within its growing range. It grows best in well-draining soil but adapts to many soil types once established.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
