PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Adagio Maiden Grass, scientifically known as Miscanthus sinensis ‘Adagio’, is a compact, ornamental grass admired for its fine-textured silver-green blades and soft, silvery-pink plumes that appear in late summer. With a tidy, fountain-like form and graceful movement in the breeze, it’s perfect for borders, mass plantings, or containers. Drought-tolerant and deer-resistant, this easy-care grass adds four-season beauty to the landscape.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; reaches 3–4 ft tall (5 ft with plumes) and 3–4 ft wide

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water every 7–10 days during hot, dry periods. Adagio Maiden Grass performs best in full sun but tolerates light shade. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily ensures compact growth and abundant plumes.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Cut back to 4–6 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.

Fertilization: Fertilize in spring with a slow-release balanced fertilizer if needed. Avoid excessive feeding to maintain a tidy form.

Winter Protection: No special protection is needed in Zones 5–9. Allow winter foliage to remain for seasonal interest, then trim back before spring.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Place the plant so the top of the root ball is even with the soil surface. Backfill, water thoroughly, and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds—keeping mulch a few inches away from the crown. In containers, use a pot with drainage and a well-draining soil mix.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

Adagio Maiden Grass grows well in USDA Zones 5–9, making it a versatile choice for much of the U.S., from the Midwest and Northeast to the South and Pacific Northwest. It thrives in sunny spots with well-draining soil and tolerates both heat and humidity. In colder regions, the foliage dies back in winter but returns reliably in spring. Its compact size and elegant plumes make it ideal for modern landscapes, cottage gardens, and even container displays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Adagio Maiden Grass typically grows to 3 to 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide, but when in bloom, the graceful flower plumes can reach up to 5 feet in height. Its compact, mounded form makes it perfect for small garden beds, borders, containers, or mass plantings.

Adagio Maiden Grass has a moderate to fast growth rate, typically reaching its full size within one growing season. Once established, it fills out quickly each spring and provides reliable texture and color from summer through fall.

Plant Adagio Maiden Grass in a sunny spot with well-draining soil. It thrives in full sun (at least 6 hours daily) and does well in USDA Zones 5–9. Ideal for low-maintenance landscapes, rock gardens, borders, and mixed beds, it’s also drought-tolerant once established and can handle a variety of soil types.

For natural spacing, plant Adagio Maiden Grass about 2.5 to 3 feet apart, center to center. If you’re creating a more dense, mass-planted look or a border, you can space them closer—around 2 feet apart. This gives them enough room to spread while still creating a cohesive, flowing display.

To grow Adagio Maiden Grass in a container:
1. Choose a pot that’s at least 14-18 inches wide and deep, with good drainage.
2. Use well-draining potting soil, ideally mixed with sand or perlite for added aeration.
3. Place in full sun for best color and plume production.
4. Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry, especially during hot months.
5. Fertilize once in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer.

Container-grown Adagio adds texture and movement to patios, balconies, and entryways.

This ornamental grass is low-maintenance and highly adaptable. Here’s how to keep it looking its best:
• Sunlight: Prefers full sun (6+ hours daily)
• Watering: Water regularly during the first season to establish; once mature, it’s drought-tolerant
• Soil: Well-draining soil; amend clay-heavy soil for better drainage
• Fertilizer: Feed once in spring with a balanced fertilizer
• Maintenance: Cut back in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges

It’s also deer-resistant and pest-free, making it a worry-free choice for busy gardeners.

Adagio Maiden Grass typically blooms in late summer to early fall, producing soft, feathery silvery-pink plumes that rise above the foliage. These plumes gradually fade to creamy tan and last well into winter, providing visual interest even in the off-season.

If your Adagio Maiden Grass isn’t producing plumes, it’s usually due to one of these factors:
• Not enough sunlight: It needs full sun to bloom well—shade reduces flower production.
• Young or newly planted: Some grasses take a full growing season to mature and bloom.
• Too much nitrogen: Over-fertilizing, especially with high-nitrogen formulas, promotes leaf growth over blooms.
• Improper pruning: Cutting back too late in spring can remove developing flower stalks.

With patience and proper care, plumes should return the following season.

Cut back Adagio Maiden Grass in late winter or early spring, just before new growth appears.
• Use sharp garden shears or hedge trimmers to cut the grass down to about 4 to 6 inches above the ground.
• Bundle the foliage with twine first for easier cleanup.
• Avoid cutting it back in the fall—its winter plumes provide beauty and shelter for wildlife.

This annual cutback rejuvenates the plant and encourages lush, fresh growth each spring.

• Spring: New green blades emerge in tidy clumps, adding fresh texture to the garden.
• Summer: The foliage grows tall and arching with a soft, elegant form—plumes begin to appear in late summer.
• Fall: Plumes turn silvery-pink to buff tan, and the foliage may take on gold or bronze tones, adding warm color to the landscape.
• Winter: The grass turns light tan, and the dried plumes remain upright, providing movement and seasonal interest even in dormancy.

Adagio offers year-round beauty, making it a favorite for four-season landscapes.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
