The Soft Leaf Yucca is a striking evergreen with gracefully arching blue-green foliage and bold summer blooms. Unlike spiky yuccas, its pliable leaves give it a softer, more elegant texture—perfect for modern, coastal, or desert-inspired landscapes. It thrives in heat, drought, and poor soil, making it a standout low-maintenance option for year-round structure.

  • Botanical name: Yucca recurvifolia (also known as Yucca pendula)
  • Bloom time: Summer
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Full sun to light partial shade

WATER:
Water deeply when soil is dry. Once established, only water during prolonged drought.

LEVEL OF CARE: EASY
Soft Leaf Yucca is drought-tolerant and requires minimal upkeep.

PET-FRIENDLY?:
Generally non-toxic, but the sharp leaf tips can irritate skin or pets if chewed.

Note: Though the foliage is softer than other yuccas, the leaf tips can still be pointed—plant away from walkways or play areas.

This plant loves dry, sunny spots. Avoid overwatering or planting in soggy soil, especially in winter, as excess moisture can lead to rot.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Soft Leaf Yucca, scientifically known as Yucca recurvifolia, is an architectural evergreen perennial with gently arching blue‑green leaves and a dramatic spike of white bell‑shaped flowers in summer. Its soft‑textured foliage (compared to stiff classic yucca) and drought‑tolerant nature make it an eye‑catching focal point for xeriscapes, Mediterranean gardens or container accents.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; typically reaches 6–8 feet tall and 6–8 feet wide in landscape use.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to help develop a strong root system. Once established, reduce watering significantly — this yucca tolerates drought conditions and only needs occasional watering when the soil is very dry. Soft Leaf Yucca performs best in full sun, although it tolerates light partial shade. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day promotes strong growth and robust flowering.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Remove spent flower spikes and any damaged or brown leaves in early spring. Minimal pruning is needed otherwise, since the plant maintains its shape naturally.

Fertilization: Fertilize sparingly. Use a slow‑release, balanced fertilizer in early spring if the soil is very poor, but excessive fertilizing is not needed and may reduce architectural impact.

Winter Protection: In its preferred zones (7–9), little winter protection is required. In marginal zones or very cold winters, ensure the roots remain well‑drained and consider a light mulch layer to protect the base from freeze‑thaw injury. Avoid wet, poorly drained sites in winter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a planting hole about twice the width of the root ball and just as deep. Place the Soft Leaf Yucca so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil surface. Backfill with native soil, pressing lightly to remove air pockets, and water thoroughly. Add a 2‑3 inch layer of mulch around the base (keeping it a few inches from the stem) to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature. Because this plant thrives in dry, well‑drained conditions, ensure the planting site drains well and avoids soggy winters. Initially monitor moisture during the first season; thereafter, allow the soil to dry more fully between waterings for optimal performance.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 7-9

This plant thrives in USDA Zones 7 through 9, making it ideal for warmer climates and mild winters. It is especially suited for hot‑sun, dry‑soil conditions that many other plants might struggle in. In cooler or borderline zones, planting in a protected spot (near a south‑facing wall) or using container culture may be advisable. Its drought‑tolerance and low‑maintenance nature make it well suited for xeriscape gardens, coastal exposures, and modern desert‑scape designs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Soft Leaf Yucca typically grows 6 to 8 feet tall and wide, forming a rounded clump of arching foliage with a tall flower stalk in summer.

This yucca grows at a moderate rate, typically adding 6 to 12 inches of growth per year, depending on sun and soil conditions.

Choose a spot with full sun and well-draining soil. It’s perfect for xeriscapes, desert-style gardens, containers, or coastal landscapes where low maintenance and drought tolerance are priorities.

Soft Leaf Yucca is low-maintenance and thrives with minimal care:
• Watering: Water deeply when the top few inches of soil are dry. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant.
• Sunlight: Prefers full sun but can handle light partial shade.
• Soil: Needs well-draining soil and does not tolerate standing water.
• Fertilizing: Fertilize sparingly in early spring if soil is poor.
• Pruning: Remove old or damaged leaves and spent flower stalks in late winter or early spring.
• Mulching: Add mulch around the base to insulate roots, but keep it off the crown.

Soft Leaf Yucca produces a dramatic spike of white bell-shaped flowers in summer, usually appearing on mature plants in full sun.

Plant in early spring or early fall to give the root system time to establish before summer heat or winter chill.

Yes, it is an evergreen perennial, maintaining its soft blue-green foliage all year long, even in mild winter climates.

Yes, it’s hardy to Zone 7 and can tolerate temperatures down to about 0°F. In colder zones, it may suffer winter damage or require protection.

Pruning is minimal—just remove damaged or yellowing leaves at the base and cut back the flower stalk after blooming to keep the plant tidy.

While not considered highly toxic, it’s best to keep pets from chewing on the leaves, as they can cause mild irritation due to the plant’s fibrous nature and sharp leaf tips.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
