PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Skylight Better Boxwood®, botanically known as Buxus hybrid ‘HER2009B03’ PP32275, is a fast-growing evergreen shrub prized for its upright growth habit, dense green foliage, and improved resistance to boxwood blight. This durable landscape shrub forms a tall, narrow hedge that provides year-round structure and privacy. Its vigorous growth and adaptability make it an excellent choice for hedges, borders, and foundation plantings.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast growth rate; typically reaches 6–8 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, water when the soil begins to dry, typically every 7–10 days depending on your local climate and weather. Skylight Better Boxwood grows well in full sun to partial shade. In warmer regions, afternoon shade can help reduce heat stress and maintain healthy foliage.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Minimal pruning is required because this shrub naturally maintains a dense, upright shape. Light trimming in late winter or early spring can help maintain a neat hedge.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy evergreen growth.

WINTER PROTECTION:
This shrub is cold hardy in its recommended zones and typically requires no winter protection once established.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball and about the same depth. Place the shrub so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch a few inches away from the stem to prevent moisture buildup.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

Skylight Better Boxwood grows well across a wide range of temperate climates within USDA Zones 5–9. It adapts to various soil types as long as the soil drains well and performs well in both full sun and partial shade. In warmer climates, some afternoon shade helps protect the foliage from heat stress. Its improved resistance to boxwood blight makes it a reliable choice for landscapes where traditional boxwoods may struggle.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
