Horstmann Blue Atlas Cedar is a unique evergreen conifer known for its silvery-blue needles and artistic branching habit. Its upright growth and sculptural form make it an eye-catching focal tree in residential landscapes. This low-maintenance cedar provides year-round color, texture, and architectural interest.

  • Botanical name: Cedrus atlantica ‘Horstmann’
  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun.

WATER:
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings. Watering frequency may vary based on climate and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 6–9. Horstmann Blue Atlas Cedar thrives in sunny locations with well-draining soil and good airflow.

Note: Horstmann Blue Atlas Cedar develops a naturally irregular, sculptural growth habit that becomes more dramatic and character-filled with age.

Our Jumbo Horstmann Blue Atlas Cedar are grown in 10-gallon nursery pots and are more mature than regular sizes, with a more developed root system, thicker trunk (caliper), and stronger overall structure. Compared to standard options, Jumbo sizes offer a larger container and greater maturity, giving the tree a more established presence at planting time.

Regular sizes are grown in 5-gallon nursery pots. These trees are healthy and well-rooted but are less mature than Jumbo sizes and will continue to develop after planting.

The difference between regular and Jumbo sizes is in container size, root development, trunk thickness (caliper), and overall maturity. Jumbo Horstmann Blue Atlas Cedar are a great option if you want a more established tree right away.

Shipping:
Jumbo Horstmann Blue Atlas Cedar are shipped burlapped, with the rootball carefully wrapped and secured with a zip tie to protect the roots and keep the tree stable during transit.

Regular sizes are shipped in their nursery pots, with the rootball wrapped in a protective plastic liner and secured with a zip tie to keep soil contained and the box clean during shipping.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Horstmann Blue Atlas Cedar, scientifically known as Cedrus atlantica ‘Horstmann’, is a striking evergreen conifer known for its silvery-blue needles, graceful branching, and unique upright growth habit. This ornamental cedar develops a sculptural appearance over time, making it a dramatic focal point in residential landscapes. With its vibrant blue foliage, cold hardiness, and year-round interest, Horstmann Blue Atlas Cedar is a favorite for specimen plantings and high-end landscape designs.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Slow growing; reaches 8-10 feet tall and 5-6 feet wide, in 10 years.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during establishment, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, Horstmann Blue Atlas Cedar is moderately drought tolerant and typically only needs supplemental watering during extended dry periods. Watering frequency will vary depending on climate, rainfall, soil conditions, and sunlight exposure.

Horstmann Blue Atlas Cedar grows best in full sun, which promotes dense growth and vibrant blue coloration.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Horstmann Blue Atlas Cedar requires minimal pruning. If shaping is desired, lightly prune in late winter to early spring to encourage new growth.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to support healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In colder zones, wrap the tree with burlap or add mulch around the base to help protect it during winter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the container. Place the tree in the hole, backfill gently, and water thoroughly after planting. Apply mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 6-9

The Horstmann Blue Atlas Cedar is hardy in USDA Zones 6-9, making it adaptable to various climates. In colder zones, it may require some winter protection. In warmer zones, it’s an easy-care, low-maintenance addition to your landscape.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
