PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Bay Laurel Shrub, scientifically known as Laurus nobilis, is a versatile evergreen herb prized for its aromatic, glossy green leaves used in cooking. Compact and easy to shape, this Mediterranean native adds structure to landscapes and grows beautifully in containers. With proper care, it offers year-round greenery and culinary value, making it a favorite among gardeners and home chefs alike.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Slow to moderate growth rate; reaches 4–8 ft tall and 4–6 ft wide when grown as a shrub (can grow taller if left unpruned or trained into tree form)

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Typically every 5–7 days in warm weather; less frequent in cooler seasons. Bay Laurel grows best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Aim for at least 4–6 hours of sunlight per day to promote dense, flavorful foliage.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Prune in spring or summer to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. It responds well to light shearing and is commonly shaped into topiary or hedge form.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once in spring. Overfertilizing is unnecessary and can reduce the aroma intensity of the leaves.

Winter Protection: In Zones below 8, grow in containers and bring indoors before frost. Indoors, place near a sunny window and reduce watering frequency.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil, backfill, and water thoroughly. Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk. If planting in a container, use a well-draining potting mix and a pot with drainage holes.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 8–11 outdoors; can be grown in Zones 4–7 in containers with winter protection

Bay Laurel thrives in USDA Zones 8–11, where it stays evergreen year-round and benefits from warm, dry summers and mild winters. It grows well in the southern United States, including parts of California, Texas, and the Gulf Coast. In colder regions, it can be grown in pots and brought indoors during the winter. Its compact growth and tolerance for pruning make it ideal for container gardens, patio accents, or formal hedges.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Bay Laurel Shrub typically grows to 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide when grown as a shrub. With time and minimal pruning, it can reach up to 10–12 feet. Its compact, upright habit makes it perfect for hedges, borders, or container gardening.

Bay Laurel has a slow to moderate growth rate, typically growing 6 to 12 inches per year. Growth is faster in warm, sunny climates with well-drained soil and consistent watering. Though it’s not a fast grower, it’s known for being low-maintenance and long-living.

Plant your Bay Laurel in a location that receives full sun to partial shade—ideally at least 4–6 hours of sunlight daily. Choose a spot with well-draining soil, as bay does not like soggy roots. It thrives in USDA Zones 8–10 and should be protected from harsh winter winds or deep freezes. In cooler climates, it’s best grown in a container that can be overwintered indoors.

For a dense privacy hedge, space Bay Laurel Shrubs 3 to 5 feet apart. This spacing allows the plants to fill in over time, creating a lush, evergreen screen. With light pruning, you can maintain a tidy, uniform shape while encouraging thick foliage coverage.

To plant Bay Laurel in a container:
1. Choose a pot at least 16–20 inches wide and deep, with drainage holes.
2. Use well-draining soil, such as a mix formulated for shrubs or Mediterranean herbs.
3. Position the container in a sunny location, receiving 4–6+ hours of direct light.
4. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry—avoid waterlogging.
5. Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound.

Container growing is ideal for cold climates or small spaces, and it makes harvesting leaves easy.

Bay Laurel is easy to care for with a few key basics:
• Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade (at least 4 hours daily)
• Watering: Water when the top inch of soil is dry; avoid overwatering
• Soil: Well-draining soil; amend clay soils to improve drainage
• Fertilizing: Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer
• Pruning: Lightly shape in early spring or late summer to maintain form
• Winter care: In colder climates, move potted plants indoors before the first frost

This evergreen shrub is drought-tolerant once established and can be pruned to suit both formal or naturalistic garden designs.

Bay Laurel typically blooms in mid to late spring with small, pale yellow flowers. While not showy, these blooms attract pollinators and may produce small black berries later in the season—though the leaves are the true star of this plant.

You can harvest Bay Laurel leaves year-round, but the best time is in late summer when the oils in the leaves are most concentrated. Simply snip mature, healthy leaves and allow them to dry fully before use. Drying enhances their flavor, making them ideal for soups, stews, sauces, and seasoning blends.

Yes, Bay Laurel is a broadleaf evergreen, meaning it retains its leaves year-round. This makes it an excellent choice for privacy hedges, topiary, or adding year-round structure to garden beds and patios.

Pruning is optional but beneficial. Light pruning:
• Encourages dense, bushy growth
• Helps maintain your desired shape or size
• Removes dead, damaged, or overly long stems

Prune in early spring before new growth begins, or lightly shape in late summer after the growing season. For topiary or hedge forms, more frequent trimming may be needed throughout the season.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
