PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Autumn Royalty® Azalea, scientifically known as Azalea x 'Conlec', is an award-winning evergreen shrub that enriches your garden with its large, vibrant, royal purple blooms. Famous for its extended flowering period and low-maintenance care requirements, this azalea cultivar is ideal for adding a luxurious pop of color in various landscapes. It thrives across different climates, making it a versatile choice for gardeners aiming to elevate their outdoor spaces with minimal fuss.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate, reaching a mature height and width of 4-5 feet.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

The Autumn Royalty® Azalea thrives best when exposed to partial to full sunlight, with an emphasis on morning sun and afternoon shade for better flower production. Watering should be consistent, aiming to keep the soil moist. Deep watering once a week is recommended, increasing the frequency during hot, dry periods.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Lightly prune Autumn Royalty Azalea after flowering, usually in late spring to early summer, to shape the plant and encourage denser growth.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a slow-release, acid-forming fertilizer in early spring to support healthy foliage and vibrant blooms.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In colder climates, mulch around the base to provide extra insulation and protect roots during winter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Select a location with well-drained, acidic soil and partial to full sunlight. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. If your soil is not acidic, consider adding soil amendments like peat moss or acidic compost. Place the azalea in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the ground. Backfill with soil, tamp down to remove air pockets, and water thoroughly. Space plants 4-6 feet apart if planting more than one. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base, avoiding direct contact with the stem, to help retain moisture.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 6-9

This azalea cultivar is well-suited for USDA Zones 6-9, making it a versatile choice for gardens across different climates. It prefers acidic, well-drained soil and can tolerate a reasonable amount of shade. In colder climates closer to zone 6, providing some wind protection is beneficial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Autumn Royalty® Azalea typically grows about 3–5 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide. It has a full, upright growth habit that works well as a hedge, foundation plant, or standalone shrub.

Autumn Royalty Azalea is a slow to moderate grower, typically adding about 6 to 12 inches per year under ideal conditions.

Plant Autumn Royalty® Azalea in partial shade, ideally with morning sun and afternoon shade. It prefers well-draining, acidic soil and a location protected from intense afternoon heat.

Space Autumn Royalty® Azaleas about 3–4 feet apart to allow for mature growth and proper airflow, especially when planting as a hedge.

Autumn Royalty® Azalea is a reblooming variety that blooms heavily in spring and again in fall, with occasional blooms throughout the summer in favorable conditions.

Yes, Autumn Royalty® Azalea is evergreen in most climates, maintaining its foliage year-round. In cooler regions, it may lose some leaves during winter but will regrow in spring.

Autumn Royalty® Azalea does best with 4–6 hours of sunlight daily, preferably morning sun. Too much harsh afternoon sun can stress the plant and reduce bloom performance.

This is often caused by too much shade, improper pruning timing, or over-fertilizing. Pruning too late in the season can remove developing buds, so it’s best to prune right after the spring bloom cycle.

Yes, Autumn Royalty® Azaleas require acidic soil with a pH of about 4.5–6.0. Proper soil conditions help ensure healthy growth, vibrant foliage, and strong blooming cycles.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
