PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Austrian Pine Tree (Pinus nigra) is a sturdy evergreen conifer with long, dark‑green needles and a classic pyramidal shape when young that matures into a broad, flat‑topped crown. Tolerant of wind, poor soils, road salt and urban conditions, this resilient pine makes a strong statement as a windbreak, screening tree or large specimen in the landscape.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast‑growing; reaches 40–60 ft tall and 15–25 ft wide under favorable conditions.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. After establishment, water only during extended dry spells or severe heat—this pine tolerates moderate drought quite well. Best to water when top 2 inches of soil is dry. This evergreen excels in full sun, receiving 6 or more hours of direct sunlight each day to maintain optimal needle color, health and branching habit.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove any dead, broken, or crossing branches and maintain healthy structure. Minimal pruning is required for Austrian Pine—focus on safety clearance and removing lower limbs if needed over driveways or walkways.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow‑release evergreen tree fertilizer in early spring to support healthy needle growth and vigor. Avoid excessive fertilization; this tree thrives more on resilience than heavy inputs.

Winter Protection: The Austrian Pine is hardy in Zone 4, but young trees benefit from a 2–3 inch mulch layer around the base in late fall to protect roots from freeze‑thaw shifts. Avoid piling mulch against the trunk. In snowy or icy regions, gently brush heavy snow off lower branches to prevent breakage.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

When planting your Austrian Pine, dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball and at the same depth. Place the tree so the top of the root ball is level with surrounding soil, and gently spread any circling roots. Backfill with firmed native soil and water thoroughly. Add a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base (keeping it a few inches away from the trunk) to conserve moisture and protect the roots. In the first year, monitor soil for dryness and water deeply when the top 1‑2 inches of soil become dry. Choose a location free of heavy shade and with good drainage, as this tree tolerates many soil types except soggy sites.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-8

The Austrian Pine thrives in USDA Zones 4 through 8, making it adaptable to many U.S. climates from northern cold to moderate zones. It tolerates harsh urban conditions, including wind, salt spray, and poor soils, making it excellent for city landscapes, coastal regions, or as a hardy windbreak. In colder zones it still holds up well provided drainage is good, and in warmer zones its tolerance for heat and drought makes it a durable choice for many homeowners.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Austrian Pine grows 40–60 feet tall and 15–25 feet wide at maturity, developing a broad, irregular crown over time.

This is a fast-growing evergreen, adding 12–24 inches per year under optimal conditions.

Plant in a location with full sun and well-draining soil. Austrian Pines are ideal for windbreaks, privacy screens, or large open spaces where their size and strength can shine.

Austrian Pines are low-maintenance once established. Here's how to care for the Austrian Pine:
• Watering: Water deeply 1–2 times per week during the first year. After that, only during long dry spells.
• Sunlight: Full sun is essential for dense growth.
• Soil: Tolerates a wide range of soils, including sandy or clay, as long as it drains well.
• Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release evergreen fertilizer in early spring if needed.
• Pruning: Minimal pruning required—remove dead or damaged limbs in late winter.
• Mulching: Add mulch around the base to conserve moisture and protect roots.

Plant in early spring or fall, when cooler temperatures and natural rainfall help roots establish before extreme weather sets in.

Yes, this is an evergreen conifer, meaning it retains its dark-green needles year-round, providing constant privacy and structure.

Once established, the Austrian Pine is very drought-tolerant and well-suited to dry or windy climates. However, regular watering is needed during its first growing season.

No regular pruning is needed. You can prune in late winter or early spring to remove lower limbs or any dead/damaged branches as needed.

Yes, Austrian Pines are generally deer-resistant, thanks to their long, tough needles and strong aroma. However, no plant is completely deer-proof if food is scarce.

Absolutely. Its dense, fast-growing foliage and tolerance to harsh conditions make it an excellent tree for windbreaks, sound barriers, and large privacy screens.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
