PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The American Beautyberry, scientifically known as Callicarpa americana, is a captivating deciduous shrub known for its vibrant and eye-catching purple berries. This native plant brings a burst of color to gardens and landscapes in the fall when the clusters of bright berries adorn its branches. It's a fantastic choice for gardeners seeking to add a touch of vivid natural beauty to their outdoor spaces. With its ease of care and ability to thrive in a range of climates, the American Beautyberry is a stunning addition, offering both ornamental appeal and a food source for wildlife.

SEASONAL DORMANCY
Perennial plants may arrive cut back or dormant depending on the season. It is normal for early spring shipments to have minimal foliage or only stems. Once planted, new growth will emerge as the plant enters its active growing season.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; mature height of 3-5 feet and width of 3-5 feet.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

American Beautyberry requires regular watering, particularly in its first growing season, and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Adequate sunlight is important for berry production, while well-drained soil promotes healthy growth.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune American Beautyberry in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth and increase berry production. Cutting back to 12–18 inches can promote a denser shrub with more berries.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In cooler climates, mulch around the base to protect roots from extreme cold.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a spot with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and of the same depth. Place the shrub in the hole, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Space multiple plants 3-5 feet apart to allow for growth.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 6-10

American Beautyberry is suited for USDA Zones 6-10. It is adaptable to a range of environmental conditions, from full sun to partial shade, and is tolerant of different soil types, though it prefers well-drained soil. This plant is resilient against heat and periods of drought, making it a versatile shrub for various garden settings.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
