PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

20th Century Asian Pear Tree, scientifically known as Pyrus pyrifolia ‘Nijisseiki’, is a popular fruit tree known for producing crisp, juicy Asian pears with a refreshing sweet flavor. Often called the Nijisseiki Pear, this variety produces round, apple-shaped pears with smooth yellow-green skin and exceptionally crunchy texture. With beautiful spring blossoms and reliable fruit production, the 20th Century Asian Pear Tree is a favorite for home orchards and backyard fruit gardens.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. These pear trees typically grow 1–2 feet per year and reach 15–20 feet tall and 12–15 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, Asian pear trees prefer consistent soil moisture, especially during fruit development. Watering needs will vary depending on soil conditions, rainfall, temperature, and local climate.

20th Century Asian Pear Trees grow best in full sun, which promotes strong flowering and fruit production.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant to shape the canopy and remove crowded branches. Regular pruning helps improve airflow and fruit production.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced fruit tree fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and fruit development. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
These pear trees are generally cold hardy within their recommended zones. Applying mulch around the base of the tree can help protect roots and maintain soil moisture during winter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Select a planting location with full sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the nursery container so the tree sits at the same level it was growing previously. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base of the tree to retain soil moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

20th Century Asian Pear Trees grow well in USDA Zones 5–9 and thrive in climates with warm summers and cool winters. These trees require winter chill hours to produce fruit and perform best in sunny locations with well-draining soil. With proper care and pollination, they can produce abundant harvests of crisp pears each season.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
