Yuletide Camellia Tree is an evergreen flowering camellia trained into an elegant tree form, featuring glossy dark green foliage and brilliant red flowers with prominent golden-yellow centers. Its fall and winter blooms provide beautiful cool-season color, while the elevated canopy creates a distinctive accent for entryways, patios, walkways, and garden beds.

  • Botanical name: Camellia sasanqua 'Yuletide'
  • Bloom time: Fall through winter
  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers partial sun to filtered shade, with approximately 4–6 hours of sunlight per day. Morning sun with afternoon protection is especially beneficial in hotter climates.

WATER
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, approximately once or twice per week during establishment. Once established, reduce watering frequency while continuing to provide supplemental water during prolonged hot or dry periods. Avoid allowing the soil to remain consistently saturated.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Best suited for Zones 7–10 and climates with mild winters. Yuletide Camellia appreciates protection from intense afternoon sun and drying winds, particularly in hotter or more exposed landscapes.

This is a tree-form Yuletide Camellia. The naturally shrubby Camellia sasanqua 'Yuletide' has been nursery-trained into a tree form with an elevated canopy. Occasional pruning may be needed to maintain its shape and remove new shoots that develop along the trunk.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Yuletide Camellia Tree, scientifically known as Camellia sasanqua 'Yuletide', is an evergreen flowering camellia trained into an elegant tree form for year-round structure and beautiful cool-season color. Brilliant red, single flowers with prominent golden-yellow stamens appear from fall into winter, standing out against glossy, dark green foliage. Its elevated, rounded canopy makes a striking accent near entryways, patios, walkways, garden beds, and other partially shaded areas of the landscape.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Reaches approximately 8–10 feet tall and 8–10 feet wide at maturity in its natural form, with the tree form maintained through pruning and training.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water your newly planted Yuletide Camellia Tree when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, typically about once or twice per week during establishment. Once established, water less frequently while continuing to provide supplemental water during extended hot or dry periods. Camellias prefer consistent moisture but should not remain in saturated soil. Watering needs vary based on climate, rainfall, temperature, sunlight exposure, soil type, drainage, and establishment phase. Monrovia specifically recommends watering when the top 3 inches of soil are dry.

Yuletide Camellia performs best in partial sun to filtered shade. Morning sunlight with some afternoon protection is particularly helpful in hot climates, while established sasanqua camellias can tolerate more sun when their roots remain cool and adequately moist.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain the tree's rounded canopy and remove dead, damaged, or unwanted growth. Avoid heavy pruning unless necessary, and remove any shoots that develop from the trunk or below the established canopy to preserve its tree form.

FERTILIZING
Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Once established, apply a fertilizer formulated for camellias or other acid-loving plants after flowering if needed. Avoid overfertilizing.

WINTER PROTECTION
Yuletide Camellia is evergreen and hardy to Zone 7, but developing flower buds can be damaged by severe freezes. A sheltered location and a 2–3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone can help protect the plant during winter, particularly near the colder edge of its range.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location with partial sun to filtered shade and well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Remove the nursery pot and gently loosen any tightly bound or circling roots. Camellias are shallow-rooted, so position the tree with the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil rather than planting it deeply. Backfill using only the native soil removed from the planting hole. Gently firm the soil and water slowly and deeply throughout the root ball and surrounding soil. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone to help retain moisture and keep the roots cool, keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 7-10

Yuletide Camellia grows best throughout USDA Zones 7–10, particularly in regions with mild winters and protection from extreme heat and drying winds. Its cool-season flowering habit provides color at a time when many other landscape plants are dormant. Partial sun or filtered shade is ideal, especially in hotter climates where protection from intense afternoon sunlight can help prevent stress. Cold weather can damage developing flower buds near the colder edge of its range, so a sheltered planting location is beneficial.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

The naturally growing Yuletide Camellia can reach approximately 8–10 feet tall and wide at maturity. Because this product is trained into a tree form, its exact mature dimensions and canopy size will depend on its initial trunk height and ongoing pruning.

Yuletide Camellia has a moderate growth rate, typically adding approximately 6–12 inches of new growth per year under favorable conditions. Growth varies depending on climate, sunlight, soil, water, and pruning.

Plant Yuletide Camellia Tree in a location with partial sun or filtered shade and well-draining soil. Morning sun with afternoon shade is an excellent choice in warmer climates. A sheltered location protected from drying winds and severe winter exposure is also beneficial.

For individual specimen trees, allow approximately 6–10 feet of space between plants, depending on how large you plan to maintain their canopies. More generous spacing allows each tree to develop as a distinct landscape accent.

Yuletide Camellia typically flowers from fall through winter, providing color when relatively few other landscape plants are blooming. Its holiday-season flowering is the inspiration behind the name “Yuletide.”

Yes, but its growth is somewhat different from that of a naturally single-trunked shade tree. New growth develops primarily throughout the trained canopy, which becomes taller and fuller over time. Regular pruning can be used to maintain the desired tree shape and overall size.

Yes. Yuletide Camellia can be grown in a large outdoor container, and its evergreen foliage and winter flowers make the tree form especially attractive near patios and entryways. Use a large container with good drainage and monitor soil moisture carefully, since containers dry out more quickly than garden soil.

Yuletide Camellia prefers slightly acidic, well-draining soil. Camellias can struggle in alkaline soil, which may lead to nutrient availability problems and yellowing foliage.

Yuletide Camellia is hardy in Zones 7–10. The evergreen plant can tolerate winter cold within this range, but developing flower buds may be damaged during hard freezes, so a protected location is helpful in colder areas.

Both are the same Camellia sasanqua 'Yuletide' cultivar and produce the same red winter flowers and evergreen foliage. A traditional Yuletide Camellia develops as a large upright shrub, while the tree form has been specially trained to create a clear trunk with an elevated flowering canopy. This makes the tree form especially striking as a specimen near an entryway, patio, walkway, or garden focal point.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
