Planting instructions
Choose a location with full sun to partial shade (afternoon shade in hot climates) and rich, moist, well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and about the same depth as the container. Loosen roots gently, set the plant at the same level it was growing, backfill with native soil, and water thoroughly. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch, keeping it a few inches from the stems. Space plants about 4 feet apart.
Watering & sunlight
Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all. Weather, soil type, drainage, plant size, and planting time all affect how quickly a plant dries out.

Use a slow-running hose, soaker hose, or drip system to water the root ball and surrounding root zone thoroughly. Allow the water to penetrate deeply (not just wet the top few inches of soil), and avoid frequent, shallow watering.

Before watering again, check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball. If it feels dry, repeat this deep-watering process. If it feels moist or soggy, wait and check again in 1–2 days. Check the soil of newly planted trees and shrubs several times per week, especially during hot, dry, or windy weather.

Irrigation run times will vary based on flow rate, soil, and system setup.

White Wedding Hydrangea flowers best in full sun to partial shade. In hot southern climates, morning sun with afternoon shade keeps blooms and foliage looking fresh.
Care guide

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth. Because it blooms on new wood, cutting back by up to one-third will not reduce this year's flowers. Remove dead or weak stems at the base.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Within Zones 4–9, it typically requires no special winter protection. A 2–3 inch layer of mulch helps protect roots and hold moisture.

Answered by Simply Trees plant experts
How big does White Wedding Hydrangea get?
White Wedding Hydrangea typically grows 4–6 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide at maturity, with a sturdy, compact, upright habit.
How fast does White Wedding Hydrangea grow?
White Wedding Hydrangea has a moderate growth rate and blooms on new wood, so it flowers in the same season it puts on new growth.
Where is the best place to plant White Wedding Hydrangea?
Plant it in full sun to partial shade with rich, moist, well-draining soil. In hot climates, morning sun with afternoon shade keeps blooms and foliage looking fresh. It's a beautiful choice for borders, foundation plantings, mass plantings, and cutting gardens.
How far apart should I plant White Wedding Hydrangeas?
Space plants about 4 feet apart. This gives each shrub room to fill out while still creating a full, continuous look in a border or mass planting.
When should I prune White Wedding Hydrangea?
Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. White Wedding blooms on new wood, so spring pruning won't cut off this year's flowers. You can cut back by up to one-third and remove any dead or weak stems at the base. Avoid pruning in late summer or fall.
When does White Wedding Hydrangea bloom?
It blooms from summer into fall, producing large, cone-shaped clusters of pure white flowers that soften to ivory as they age.
Can I change the flower color of White Wedding Hydrangea?
No. Unlike bigleaf hydrangeas, panicle hydrangeas like White Wedding don't change color with soil pH. Its blooms stay white, gradually softening to ivory as they age.
Can White Wedding Hydrangea grow in full sun?
Yes. Panicle hydrangeas are among the most sun-tolerant hydrangeas. In the hottest regions, some afternoon shade and consistent moisture help keep blooms and foliage looking their best.
Will White Wedding Hydrangea bloom after a cold winter?
Yes. It's hardy in USDA Zones 4–9, and because it blooms on new wood, flower buds form on the current season's growth. That means it blooms reliably even after harsh winters.
Are White Wedding Hydrangea flowers good for cutting?
Yes. Its long, sturdy stems and large white blooms make excellent cut flowers for bouquets and arrangements. The strong stems also mean less flopping in the garden.
