The Weeping Norway Spruce is an eye-catching evergreen prized for its cascading branches and dramatic form. This weeping spruce brings movement and structure to any landscape with rich green needles and a flowing habit that looks beautiful year-round. It can be trained upright for height or allowed to spill naturally across the ground, making it a perfect specimen tree for gardens, entryways, rock landscapes, and woodland plantings.

  • Botanical name: Picea abies ‘Pendula’
  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Full sun to partial shade

WATER:
Water deeply once per week during the first growing season. After establishment, water every 10–14 days depending on heat, rainfall, and soil moisture. Avoid standing water — spruces prefer slightly dry soil between deep soakings

LEVEL OF CARE: EASY
Low maintenance once established

PET-FRIENDLY?:
Generally safe around pets

Note: This spruce grows differently depending on how it is trained. We ship it as a staked, upright tree.
• Staked upright: Tall, narrow form — 15–25 ft tall and 2–4 ft wide
• Unstaked: Low and spreading — 2–4 ft tall and 6+ ft wide

Each Weeping Norway Spruce develops its own unique shape, making no two trees look alike — a natural and desirable trait of this variety.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Weeping Norway Spruce is an eye-catching evergreen prized for its cascading branches and dramatic, sculptural form. This variety is grown and shipped staked upright, creating a tall, narrow silhouette with flowing branches that add movement and year-round structure to the landscape. Once planted, it can be left staked to maintain height or unstaked and allowed to spill naturally, forming a low, spreading shrub-like shape. With rich green needles and a unique weeping habit, it makes a striking specimen for gardens, entryways, rock landscapes, and woodland plantings.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. If staked, mature height (15-25 ft) and mature width (2-4 ft). If left unstaked, mature height (2-4 ft) and mature width (6+ ft).

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once per week during the first growing season. After establishment, water every 10–14 days depending on heat, rainfall, and soil drainage. Increase watering during long dry spells, and avoid waterlogged soil, which can lead to stress or root issues. Grows best in full sun but tolerates partial shade. More sun increases density and keeps branches compact, while partial shade may produce a looser weeping form.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Minimal pruning needed. Shape only to direct the structure or remove damaged wood. Upright forms require staking while young if height is desired.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a slow-release evergreen fertilizer in early spring or use compost if soil is nutrient-rich. Mulching helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Naturally cold hardy and typically needs no additional winter protection. Mulch the base in fall to insulate shallow roots, and gently brush heavy snow off branches to prevent breakage.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than its soil line. Place the tree carefully—staking upright if you want height—and backfill with native soil while firming gently to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting and apply mulch in a wide ring around the drip line, keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk. Continue weekly deep watering during the first growing season to develop a strong root system.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 3-7

The Weeping Norway Spruce thrives in regions with cold winters and moderate summer temperatures. Extremely hardy, it tolerates snowy, windy, and icy climates with ease and keeps deep green needles year-round. This evergreen performs best in full sun with well-draining soil and adapts to clay, rocky ground, or slopes once established. In warmer areas near Zone 7, afternoon shade and consistent moisture help reduce summer stress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Size depends on how the tree is grown and trained. When kept staked upright, it typically reaches 15–25 feet tall and 2–4 feet wide. If unstaked, it grows as a low, spreading form, reaching 2–4 feet tall and 6 feet or wider.

This spruce has a slow to moderate growth rate. Expect steady growth each year, with faster visual impact when grown staked upright.

Plant in full sun to partial shade with well-draining soil. Choose a location with enough space for its mature form, whether you plan to keep it staked for height or allow it to spread naturally.

It comes staked upright from our grower. This allows the tree to develop height and structure. Once planted, you may keep it staked to maintain an upright form or remove the stake and let it spill naturally as a low-growing, weeping shrub.

Yes. Removing the stake will allow the branches to cascade outward and downward, creating a ground-hugging, spreading form. Staking or unstaking is a design choice and does not affect the plant’s health.

Not necessarily. The tree is typically staked while young to help establish height and structure. Once it has developed a strong central leader, many growers remove the stake and allow the trunk to support itself. Some homeowners choose to keep it staked longer for added height control, but permanent staking is not required for a healthy, upright tree.

Yes, in some cases. If you plan to keep the tree growing upright, the original stake may need to be adjusted, replaced, or extended as the tree gains height. Always ensure ties are loose and flexible to prevent damage and allow natural movement, which helps strengthen the trunk.

If grown upright, plant at least 6–8 feet from buildings or walkways. If planning to let it spread, allow 8–10 feet or more for its mature width.

Very little pruning is required. Prune only to remove damaged branches or to guide shape. Avoid heavy pruning to preserve its natural weeping form.

Yes. It is extremely cold hardy and performs well in USDA Zones 3–7, tolerating snow, wind, and freezing temperatures.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
