PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Sweetheart Blueberry Bush is a productive, self-fertile blueberry variety known for its sweet flavor and extended harvest season. This compact to medium-sized bush produces large, firm blueberries with excellent taste and is valued for its ability to fruit over a longer period than many traditional blueberries. With glossy green foliage that turns red in fall, the Sweetheart Blueberry Bush offers both ornamental appeal and reliable homegrown fruit for gardens and containers.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; reaches a mature height of 4–5 ft and mature width of 4–5 ft.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season to establish roots. After establishment, water regularly to keep soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and fruit development. Blueberries do not tolerate drought or soggy soil, so consistent moisture is key. Plant in full sun for the best fruit production and sweetest berries. Partial shade is tolerated, but yields may be reduced.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter while the plant is dormant. Remove dead, weak, or crossing branches and thin older canes to encourage new growth and maintain airflow. Light annual pruning supports better fruit size and production.

FERTILIZING:
Feed with an acid-loving fertilizer formulated for blueberries or azaleas in early spring. Avoid over-fertilizing, as blueberries are sensitive to excess nutrients.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Hardy in its growing zones. In colder regions, apply mulch around the base to protect shallow roots. Container-grown plants may benefit from additional insulation during extreme cold.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Plant in acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth as the container. Backfill with amended soil if needed, water thoroughly, and apply mulch such as pine bark or pine needles to maintain soil acidity and moisture. Continue regular watering during the first growing season to establish a strong root system.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

The Sweetheart Blueberry Bush grows best in regions with cold winters and warm summers and requires a winter chill period for consistent fruit production. It performs well across much of the U.S. when planted in acidic, well-draining soil. In warmer climates, afternoon shade can help reduce heat stress, while in cooler zones, full sun supports stronger growth and higher yields. This variety adapts well to both in-ground planting and large containers.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
