Planting instructions
Choose a location in full sun with well-draining soil, at least 8 feet from buildings and away from patios, drives, and septic systems. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the nursery container. Place the tree, backfill with native soil, and gently firm to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting and apply 2–3 inches of mulch, keeping it a few inches from the trunk. For a screen, space trees about 8–12 feet apart.
Watering & sunlight
Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all. Weather, soil type, drainage, plant size, and planting time all affect how quickly a plant dries out.

Use a slow-running hose, soaker hose, or drip system to water the root ball and surrounding root zone thoroughly. Allow the water to penetrate deeply (not just wet the top few inches of soil), and avoid frequent, shallow watering.

Before watering again, check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball. If it feels dry, repeat this deep-watering process. If it feels moist or soggy, wait and check again in 1–2 days. Check the soil of newly planted trees and shrubs several times per week, especially during hot, dry, or windy weather.

Irrigation run times will vary based on flow rate, soil, and system setup.

Swedish Aspen grows best in full sun. Sun on all sides keeps the column dense and full from top to bottom.
Care guide

PRUNING:
Little pruning is needed to keep its narrow shape. In late winter, remove dead or damaged branches and any suckers coming up from the roots.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if growth is weak. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Within Zones 3–7, it typically needs no special winter protection. A 2–3 inch layer of mulch helps young trees retain moisture.

Answered by Simply Trees plant experts
How big does Swedish Aspen get?
Swedish Aspen typically grows 30–40 feet tall and only 5–10 feet wide, keeping a narrow, columnar shape.
How fast does Swedish Aspen grow?
Swedish Aspen is a fast grower, typically adding about 2–3 feet of height per year under good growing conditions.
Where is the best place to plant Swedish Aspen?
Plant it in full sun and well-draining soil. Its slim profile makes it ideal along property lines, driveways, and between buildings where wider trees won't fit.
How far apart should I plant Swedish Aspen for a privacy screen?
For a privacy screen, space trees about 8–12 feet apart. Closer spacing fills in faster, while wider spacing gives each tree more room as it matures.
Is Swedish Aspen good for a privacy screen?
Yes. Its fast growth and narrow, columnar shape make it a quick way to add height and screening in tight spaces. Keep in mind that it's deciduous, so it provides screening from spring through fall and drops its leaves in winter.
Does Swedish Aspen spread through its roots?
It can send up root suckers, especially if the roots are damaged by mowing, digging, or construction. Simply remove unwanted suckers as they appear to keep the planting tidy.
How close to my house can I plant Swedish Aspen?
Plant it at least 8 feet from buildings, and keep it away from foundations, patios, driveways, and septic systems.
What color does Swedish Aspen turn in the fall?
Its rounded green leaves turn yellow in fall before dropping for winter.
Does Swedish Aspen need full sun?
Yes. Full sun on all sides keeps the column dense and full from top to bottom. In shade, the lower branches tend to drop, leaving the lower trunk bare.
Is Swedish Aspen cold hardy?
Yes. Swedish Aspen is very cold hardy in USDA Zones 3–7 and handles harsh winters and wind well. It performs best in regions with cold winters and moderate summers and typically needs no special winter protection.
