Super Blue Liriope is an evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial groundcover featuring dense clumps of dark green, arching foliage and showy blue-violet flower spikes. Its adaptable, low-maintenance growth makes it an excellent choice for edging walkways, mass plantings, foundation beds, slopes, and shady areas beneath trees and shrubs.

Botanical name: Liriope muscari 'Super Blue'
Bloom time: Summer into early fall
Evergreen to semi-evergreen, depending on climate
Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Grows in full sun to shade. Partial sun or filtered shade can be beneficial in particularly hot climates.

WATER
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, approximately once or twice per week during establishment. Once established, Super Blue Liriope is drought tolerant and generally requires less frequent watering. Avoid consistently saturated soil.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Best suited for Zones 5–10. Super Blue Liriope adapts well to a broad range of climates and is particularly tolerant of heat and humidity once established.

Super Blue Liriope is generally evergreen in warmer climates, but foliage may brown or die back during colder winters. This is normal and does not necessarily indicate the plant has died. Trim old foliage in late winter or early spring before fresh growth emerges.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Super Blue Liriope, scientifically known as Liriope muscari 'Super Blue', is a hardy, low-maintenance perennial groundcover with dense clumps of arching, dark green, grass-like foliage. Showy blue-violet to purple flower spikes rise above the foliage in summer, followed by clusters of dark purple-black berries that extend its seasonal interest. Its tidy clumping habit makes it an excellent choice for landscape borders, walkway edging, mass plantings, foundation beds, slopes, and areas beneath trees and shrubs.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast growth rate. Reaches approximately 18–20 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water your newly planted Super Blue Liriope when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, typically about once or twice per week during establishment. Once established, it becomes drought tolerant and generally requires less frequent supplemental watering. Avoid keeping the soil consistently saturated, particularly in poorly drained locations. Watering needs vary based on climate, rainfall, temperature, sunlight exposure, soil type, drainage, and establishment phase.

Super Blue Liriope is highly adaptable to light and can grow in full sun, partial shade, or shade. In hot climates, partial shade or protection from intense afternoon sun can help maintain attractive foliage.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Little pruning is required. In late winter or early spring, before fresh growth appears, trim back old or damaged foliage to make room for clean new growth.

FERTILIZING
Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Once established, apply a balanced fertilizer in spring if needed. Avoid overfertilizing.

WINTER PROTECTION
Established Super Blue Liriope generally requires little winter protection within its recommended growing zones. In colder climates, foliage may brown or die back during winter; damaged foliage can simply be trimmed away before new spring growth emerges.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location ranging from full sun to shade with well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Remove the nursery pot and gently loosen any tightly bound or circling roots. Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill using only the native soil removed from the planting hole without adding compost, peat moss, sand, rock, or other amendments directly to the hole. Gently firm the soil and water slowly and deeply throughout the root ball and surrounding soil. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the plant, keeping mulch away from the crown.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-10

Super Blue Liriope grows well throughout USDA Zones 5–10 and handles a wide range of growing conditions once established. It performs especially well in warm, humid climates but has enough cold hardiness for many colder regions as well. This adaptable perennial tolerates sun and shade, different soil types, and periods of drought once established. In colder areas, winter weather may cause foliage to brown or die back even though the roots remain hardy and return with fresh growth in spring.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Super Blue Liriope typically reaches approximately 18–20 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide at maturity. Its flower spikes can extend slightly above the foliage when in bloom.

Super Blue Liriope has a moderate to fast growth rate and can typically add approximately 6–12 inches of growth per year while establishing under favorable conditions. Over time, each clump gradually becomes wider and fuller.

Super Blue Liriope is extremely versatile and can grow in full sun, partial shade, or shade. It works especially well along walkways, around foundation plantings, beneath trees and shrubs, on slopes, or planted in groups as a groundcover.

For a dense border or mass planting, space Super Blue Liriope approximately 12–18 inches apart, center to center. Wider spacing can be used if you prefer visible separation between individual clumps.

Super Blue Liriope typically flowers from summer into early fall, producing upright spikes of blue-violet to purple flowers above its dark green foliage.

Super Blue Liriope is generally evergreen in warmer climates and semi-evergreen in colder climates. Cold winter weather may cause foliage to brown or die back, but healthy established plants typically produce fresh foliage again in spring.

Super Blue Liriope is a clump-forming Liriope, so it gradually becomes wider over time rather than aggressively spreading through underground runners. This makes it easier to maintain as a defined border or groundcover than more aggressively spreading Liriope types.

Yes. Super Blue Liriope can grow in shady locations, making it useful beneath trees and shrubs or in areas where many flowering plants struggle. Plants receiving more sunlight may produce a heavier flower display.

Yes. Super Blue Liriope tolerates full sun, provided it receives adequate moisture while establishing. In very hot climates, some afternoon shade can help protect the foliage from intense heat.

Yes. Once established, Super Blue Liriope is drought tolerant and can handle periods of dry weather. Newly planted Liriope should receive more consistent moisture while its root system becomes established.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
