Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea produces showy flower clusters that emerge creamy white in midsummer before gradually transitioning to beautiful strawberry pink as nighttime temperatures cool. Its compact, upright growth habit and long-lasting blooms make it an excellent choice for small landscapes, flowering hedges, mass plantings, and cut flower gardens.

  • Botanical name: Hydrangea paniculata ‘Rensun’ PP25,438
  • Bloom time: Midsummer into fall
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sun to partial shade. Some afternoon shade can be beneficial in hotter climates.

WATER
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Water deeply approximately once or twice per week during establishment, adjusting based on rainfall and soil moisture. Once established, water during extended hot or dry periods and avoid consistently saturated soil. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, sunlight exposure, soil type, weather, drainage, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Best suited for Zones 3–8. Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea is exceptionally cold hardy and adapts well to a broad range of temperate climates. It performs well in full sun to partial shade, and its flowers transition from creamy white to strawberry pink as nighttime temperatures cool.

Note: Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea flowers do not emerge pink. The blooms begin creamy white in midsummer before gradually transitioning to strawberry pink as nighttime temperatures cool. Flower color, intensity, and timing of the transition can vary depending on climate and seasonal temperatures.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea, scientifically known as Hydrangea paniculata ‘Rensun’, is a compact panicle hydrangea celebrated for its creamy white flowers that gradually transition to beautiful strawberry pink. Its large summer blooms deepen in color as nighttime temperatures cool and last well into fall, extending the season of interest. With its compact, upright habit, Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea is an excellent flowering shrub for small spaces, foundation plantings, hedges, mass plantings, and cut flower gardens.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Reaches approximately 4–5 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water your newly planted Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, typically about once or twice per week during establishment. Once established, water deeply during extended hot or dry periods and avoid allowing the soil to remain consistently saturated. Always check soil moisture before watering rather than following a fixed schedule. Watering frequency varies depending on grow zone, local climate, rainfall, temperature, sunlight exposure, soil type, drainage, and establishment phase.

Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea grows well in full sun to partial shade. In cooler climates, it can thrive with abundant direct sunlight, while some afternoon shade can help reduce heat and moisture stress in hotter parts of its growing range. First Editions® lists its exposure as full sun to part shade.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Prune Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea in early spring before vigorous new growth begins. Panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood, so pruning can be used to remove dead or damaged branches, improve shape, and encourage strong new growth. First Editions® specifically recommends early spring pruning for this variety.

FERTILIZING
Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Once established, apply a balanced fertilizer in spring or early summer when needed to support healthy foliage and flowering. First Editions® recommends a balanced NPK fertilizer for Strawberry Sundae®. Avoid excessive fertilization and do not fertilize in fall or winter.

WINTER PROTECTION
Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea is highly cold hardy and suitable for USDA Zones 3–8. Established plants generally require minimal winter protection within their recommended growing range. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone to help moderate soil temperature and moisture, particularly for newly planted shrubs, keeping mulch several inches away from the stems.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location for your Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea that receives full sun to partial shade and has well-draining soil. Dig a planting hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Carefully remove the hydrangea from its nursery container and loosen any circling or tightly bound roots. Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill using the native soil removed from the planting hole without adding compost, peat moss, sand, rock, or other amendments directly to the hole. Gently firm the soil to remove large air pockets, then water slowly and deeply throughout the root ball and surrounding soil. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping it several inches away from the stems. Space Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangeas approximately 3–4 feet apart to accommodate their mature width, or slightly closer when creating a dense flowering hedge.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 3-8

Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea thrives in USDA Zones 3–8, providing excellent cold hardiness across a wide range of climates. It grows well in full sun to partial shade, although some afternoon shade can be beneficial in hotter areas. The flowers emerge creamy white in midsummer and transition to pink as nighttime temperatures cool, with the strawberry-pink color lasting well into fall. Its compact size makes it particularly well suited to smaller landscapes where a full-size panicle hydrangea may be too large.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea reaches approximately 4–5 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide at maturity. Its compact, upright growth habit makes it especially useful in smaller landscapes and spaces where larger panicle hydrangeas may not fit.

Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea has a moderate growth rate, typically growing approximately 1–2 feet per year under favorable conditions. Growth rate can vary based on climate, sunlight, soil, moisture, pruning, and overall plant health.

Plant Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea in a location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Its compact 4–5-foot-tall by 3–4-foot-wide habit makes it an excellent choice near foundations, underneath windows, in mixed borders, or as a small flowering hedge.

Space Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangeas approximately 3–4 feet apart to accommodate their mature width. For a denser flowering hedge, they can be planted somewhat closer depending on the desired finished appearance.

Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea begins blooming in midsummer, producing creamy white flowers that gradually turn strawberry pink as nighttime temperatures cool. The colorful flowers can persist well into fall, often extending the display until frost.

Strawberry Sundae® is a panicle hydrangea and blooms on new wood, meaning its flowers develop on growth produced during the current growing season. This reliable flowering habit also means winter damage to old stems is less likely to eliminate the following season’s blooms.

Prune Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea in early spring before vigorous new growth begins. Remove dead or damaged branches and prune as needed to maintain its compact shape and encourage strong new growth.

No. Strawberry Sundae® Hydrangea grows well in full sun to partial shade. Full sun can support abundant flowering in cooler climates, while afternoon shade may be beneficial in hotter climates.

The flowers begin creamy white before transitioning to strawberry pink as the season progresses and nighttime temperatures cool. This changing coloration can create a beautiful multi-toned display before the flowers deepen in color toward fall.

The pink coloration develops as the flowers mature and nighttime temperatures begin to cool, so timing and color intensity can vary by climate and seasonal weather. In warmer climates or during unusually warm seasons, the transition to strawberry pink may occur later or appear less intense.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
