Shiranui Mandarin Tree produces some of the sweetest and most flavorful mandarins in the world. Known for its distinctive top knot, seedless fruit, and easy-to-peel rind, this premium citrus variety is prized for its exceptionally juicy flesh and rich, low-acid flavor. Fragrant white blossoms appear in spring before giving way to delicious fruit that ripens in late winter, making it a rewarding addition to home orchards and edible landscapes.

  • Botanical name: Citrus reticulata 'Shiranui*
  • Bloom time: Spring
  • Harvest time: Late winter
  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sun.

WATER
Water deeply at the base when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. During establishment, this is typically once or twice per week, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Once established, water less frequently during dry periods. Watering frequency varies depending on climate, soil type, rainfall, sunlight exposure, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Hardy in USDA Zones 9–11. Shiranui Mandarin thrives in warm climates and grows beautifully in home orchards, edible landscapes, and large patio containers.

Note: Shiranui mandarins often develop their signature "top knot" near the stem as they mature. This natural characteristic is a hallmark of the variety and does not affect the fruit's exceptional sweetness or quality.

*We cannot guarantee the Shiranui Mandarin Tree you receive will already be bearing fruit. This depends on the season and the overall growth pattern.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Shiranui Mandarin Tree, scientifically known as Citrus reticulata 'Shiranui', is a premium citrus tree famous for producing exceptionally sweet, seedless mandarins with a distinctive "top knot" shape. Shiranui fruit is incredibly juicy, easy to peel, and prized for its rich, complex flavor with very low acidity. With fragrant white spring blossoms, glossy evergreen foliage, and abundant winter harvests, this tree is an outstanding addition to home orchards, patios, and edible landscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate-growing evergreen citrus tree. Typically reaches approximately 8–12 feet tall and 6–10 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply at the base when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. During establishment, this is typically once or twice per week, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Once established, water less frequently, providing occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Watering frequency will vary depending on climate, soil type, rainfall, sunlight exposure, and the tree's establishment phase.

Shiranui Mandarin Tree grows best in full sun. Provide at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for the healthiest growth, abundant flowering, and maximum fruit production.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and maintain the tree's natural shape. Minimal pruning is typically needed beyond occasional thinning.

FERTILIZING
Feed with a fertilizer formulated for citrus trees beginning in early spring and continue according to label directions throughout the growing season. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the tree to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION
Protect young trees from freezing temperatures. In colder portions of its growing range, mulch around the base and cover the canopy during freezes. Container-grown trees should be moved indoors or to a protected location before temperatures fall below freezing.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Plant Shiranui Mandarin Tree in a location that receives full sun and has well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and no deeper than the rootball itself. Position the top of the rootball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil, backfill with native soil, water deeply after planting, and apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base while keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 9-11

Shiranui Mandarin Tree thrives in warm, sunny climates with well-draining soil. Hardy in USDA Zones 9–11, it performs beautifully in home orchards and edible landscapes. In colder climates, it can be grown in a large container and moved to a protected location during freezing weather.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shiranui Mandarin Tree typically grows 8–12 feet tall and 6–10 feet wide, making it an excellent size for home orchards, edible landscapes, and large patio containers.

Shiranui Mandarin Tree is a moderate-growing citrus tree that typically grows approximately 12–24 inches per year under favorable growing conditions.

Choose a location with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day and well-draining soil. A warm, sunny site protected from strong winds will encourage healthy growth and abundant fruit production.

Plant Shiranui Mandarin Trees approximately 10–15 feet apart to allow room for their mature canopy and healthy air circulation.

Shiranui is the citrus variety used to produce the fruit commonly sold as Sumo Citrus®. While "Sumo Citrus®" is a trademarked brand name, the variety itself is known as Shiranui and is prized worldwide for its exceptional sweetness, easy-to-peel skin, and distinctive top knot.

Shiranui Mandarin Tree blooms in spring, producing fragrant white flowers that develop into fruit ready for harvest in late winter.

Most Shiranui Mandarin Trees begin producing fruit within 2–4 years after planting, depending on the age of the tree at purchase and growing conditions.

Yes. Shiranui Mandarin Tree grows very well in a large container with excellent drainage. Container growing is ideal for gardeners outside USDA Zones 9–11 because the tree can be moved to a protected location during freezing weather.

No. Shiranui Mandarin Tree is self-pollinating, so a single tree can produce fruit on its own without another citrus tree nearby.

The distinctive bump, often called a "top knot," is a natural characteristic of Shiranui mandarins. It develops as the fruit matures and is one of the easiest ways to identify the variety. The bump has no effect on the fruit's quality and is often associated with the premium mandarins sold in grocery stores.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
