PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Shin Deshojo Japanese Maple, botanically known as Acer palmatum ‘Shin Deshojo’, is a highly sought-after ornamental tree prized for its brilliant red spring foliage and refined, compact form. New growth emerges an intense crimson red before softening slightly as the season progresses, creating striking visual interest in gardens and landscapes. This elegant deciduous tree is ideal for focal points, patios, and smaller landscapes where year-round structure and seasonal color are desired.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Slow to moderate growth rate; typically reaches 10–15 feet tall and 10–15 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply 1–2 times per week during the first growing season. Once established, water weekly during dry periods, keeping soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Shin Deshojo Japanese Maple prefers morning sun with afternoon shade to protect its delicate foliage. Too much direct afternoon sun can cause leaf scorch, especially in warmer climates.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune Shin Deshojo Japanese Maple during winter dormancy, removing dead or overlapping branches to maintain its natural shape and improve airflow.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause excessive growth.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture and protect roots from freezing temperatures.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than the root ball itself. Plant with the root flare slightly above soil level. Backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and apply mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

Shin Deshojo Japanese Maple thrives in temperate climates with mild summers and cool winters. It performs best in regions with protection from harsh afternoon sun and strong winds. Consistent moisture and well-draining soil are key to maintaining healthy foliage color. This variety is well suited for both northern and southern gardens when planted in the proper microclimate.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
