Planting instructions
Choose a location with full sun and enriched, well-drained soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than its height. Carefully remove the Salute® White Meadow Sage from its container, loosen any tightly circling roots, and position the crown level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with the original soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly to settle the root zone. Space plants approximately 12 inches apart to accommodate their mature width and promote healthy air circulation. Keep the soil moderately moist during establishment, but avoid standing water or persistently soggy conditions.
Watering & sunlight
Water newly planted Salute® White Meadow Sage deeply and regularly during its first growing season, generally about once or twice per week when rainfall is insufficient. Allow the upper 1–2 inches of soil to dry slightly before watering again. Once established, reduce watering frequency and provide supplemental water primarily during extended hot or dry periods. Watering needs vary according to USDA Grow Zone, local climate, rainfall, temperature, soil type, drainage, and whether the plant is grown in the ground or a container.

Plant Salute® White Meadow Sage where it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun encourages abundant white flowers and compact growth, although light afternoon shade may be helpful in areas with intense summer heat.
Care guide

PRUNING
Remove old or damaged stems in late winter or early spring, cutting the plant back to approximately 3 inches above the soil before new growth begins. Remove faded flower spikes throughout the growing season to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage continuous blooming.

FERTILIZING
Apply a light layer of compost or a small amount of balanced, slow-release fertilizer before new spring growth begins. Avoid excessive fertilizer, which may encourage weak, leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION
Established Salute® White Meadow Sage generally requires little winter protection in USDA Zones 4–9. Leave some top growth in place through winter, then cut it back before new spring growth emerges. In colder areas, apply a light layer of mulch after the ground freezes, keeping it away from the crown to limit excess moisture and rot. Container-grown plants may require additional protection from repeated freezing and thawing.

Answered by Simply Trees plant experts
How big does Salute® White Meadow Sage get?
Salute® White Meadow Sage reaches approximately 16 inches tall and 12 inches wide at maturity. Its compact, upright habit makes it suitable for border fronts, small gardens, mass plantings, and patio containers.
How fast does Salute® White Meadow Sage grow?
Salute® White Meadow Sage has a moderate growth rate and may flower during its first growing season under favorable conditions. Growth varies with planting time, climate, sunlight, soil quality, and available moisture.
Where is the best place to plant Salute® White Meadow Sage?
Plant Salute® White Meadow Sage in a sunny perennial border, pollinator garden, cut-flower garden, or mass planting. Select a location with good air circulation and soil that drains freely following irrigation or rainfall.
How far apart should I plant Salute® White Meadow Sage?
Space Salute® White Meadow Sage plants approximately 12 inches apart, measuring from the center of each plant. This spacing allows their compact mounds to develop into a full display without excessive crowding.
When does Salute® White Meadow Sage bloom?
Salute® White Meadow Sage begins flowering in late spring and can continue into early fall. Removing spent flower spikes encourages continuous bloom and helps preserve the plant’s tidy appearance.
Can Salute® White Meadow Sage be used as a cut flower?
Yes. The upright spikes of pure white flowers make Salute® White Meadow Sage an attractive addition to fresh garden arrangements. Cut stems when several flowers on each spike have opened, preferably during the cooler morning hours.
Is Salute® White Meadow Sage resistant to deer and rabbits?
Salute® White Meadow Sage is considered resistant to deer and rabbits because of its aromatic foliage. No plant is completely animal-proof, but meadow sage is commonly avoided by browsing wildlife.
Can Salute® White Meadow Sage grow in a container?
Yes. Its compact dimensions make Salute® White Meadow Sage an excellent choice for patio pots and mixed perennial containers. Use a container with drainage holes and a well-draining potting mix, and monitor soil moisture more frequently than you would for an in-ground plant.
Is Salute® White Meadow Sage invasive?
Salute® White Meadow Sage is a compact, clump-forming perennial and is not generally considered invasive. It gradually increases in size from its crown but does not spread aggressively through underground runners.
Can Salute® White Meadow Sage grow in clay soil?
Salute® White Meadow Sage can grow in amended clay soil if the planting site drains well and does not remain waterlogged. Incorporate organic matter or use a slightly raised planting location to improve drainage and reduce the risk of crown and root rot.
