Planting instructions
Choose a well‑drained site with full sun to partial shade and dig a planting hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. Gently remove the tree from its container and set it so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil, tamping lightly to remove air pockets, then water thoroughly. Add a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk to avoid rot. Water regularly for the first season to establish a strong root system, and avoid overly wet conditions, especially in clay soils, as redbuds prefer moderate moisture and good drainage.
Watering & sunlight
Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all. Weather, soil type, drainage, plant size, and planting time all affect how quickly a plant dries out.

Use a slow-running hose, soaker hose, or drip system to water the root ball and surrounding root zone thoroughly. Allow the water to penetrate deeply (not just wet the top few inches of soil), and avoid frequent, shallow watering.

Before watering again, check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball. If it feels dry, repeat this deep-watering process. If it feels moist or soggy, wait and check again in 1–2 days. Check the soil of newly planted trees and shrubs several times per week, especially during hot, dry, or windy weather.

Irrigation run times will vary based on flow rate, soil, and system setup.

Ruby Falls performs best with at least 4–6 hours of direct sun each day to maximize flower and leaf color. In hot summer climates, afternoon shade can help prevent leaf scorch and stress.
Care guide

PRUNING:
Prune this weeping redbud in late spring or early summer after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning in early spring, as that can reduce flowers.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow‑release fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins to support healthy foliage and bloom production. Work it lightly into the soil around the drip line, and avoid over‑fertilizing, which can lead to excessive leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Ruby Falls is cold‑hardy in Zones 5–9 and typically needs no special winter protection once established. In areas prone to late freezes, applying mulch around the root zone can help insulate soil and protect roots from extreme fluctuations.

Answered by Simply Trees plant experts
How big does the Ruby Falls Redbud get?
Ruby Falls Redbud grows to a mature size of 6–8 feet tall and 5–6 feet wide, with a naturally weeping form that makes it perfect for small gardens, patios, and tight landscape areas.
How fast does the Ruby Falls Redbud grow?
This tree has a moderate growth rate, typically growing 12–18 inches per year under ideal conditions with consistent watering and sunlight.
Where is the best place to plant a Ruby Falls Redbud?
Plant in a location with well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. It does especially well in morning sun with some afternoon shade in hot climates. Ideal as a specimen tree in front yards, courtyards, or landscape beds.
When does the Ruby Falls Redbud bloom?
Ruby Falls blooms in early spring, before leaf-out, with lavender-pink flowers that cover its bare branches and attract pollinators like bees.
What color are the leaves on Ruby Falls Redbud?
The heart-shaped leaves emerge as deep burgundy to reddish-purple in spring and mature to a rich green-purple mix in summer, offering striking foliage contrast all season.
Is the Ruby Falls Redbud cold hardy?
Yes, it’s hardy in USDA Zones 5–9, able to withstand winter temperatures down to around -20°F once well-established.

How much sunlight does the Ruby Falls Redbud need?
It grows best in full sun to partial shade, needing at least 4–6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal flowering and foliage color. In hotter zones, some afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch.
