Planting instructions
Choose a location with full sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth as the container. Wear gloves to protect your hands from the thorny stems. Loosen roots gently, backfill with native soil, and water thoroughly. Apply mulch around the base to conserve moisture, keeping mulch a few inches away from the stems. Space plants 4–5 feet apart, or 3–4 feet apart for a hedge.
Watering & sunlight
Water your newly planted Rosy Glow Barberry when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, typically about once per week during the first growing season and more often during hot, dry, or windy weather. Water slowly and deeply so moisture reaches the entire root ball. Once established, it is drought tolerant and only needs supplemental water during extended periods of heat or drought. Avoid allowing the soil to remain consistently saturated, as barberry does not tolerate soggy conditions. There is no fixed watering schedule, so always check the soil first and adjust based on climate, rainfall, temperature, sunlight exposure, soil type, drainage, and establishment phase.

Rosy Glow Barberry performs best in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Plenty of sunlight produces the brightest rose-pink new growth and rich reddish-purple foliage. It tolerates partial sun, but foliage color may be less vivid with less light.
Care guide

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Light shaping encourages fresh new growth, which carries the brightest pink color. Wear gloves and long sleeves when pruning.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if needed. Barberry is not a heavy feeder. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Very cold hardy and does not require winter protection within Zones 4–8. Mulch around the base to protect roots and conserve moisture.

Answered by Simply Trees plant experts
How big does Rosy Glow Barberry get?
Rosy Glow Barberry typically grows 4–5 feet tall and 4–5 feet wide at maturity, forming a rounded, slightly arching shrub.
How fast does Rosy Glow Barberry grow?
It has a slow to moderate growth rate and reaches its mature size over several years, so it needs only occasional pruning to keep its shape.
Where is the best place to plant Rosy Glow Barberry?
Plant in full sun with well-draining soil for the brightest foliage color. It works well in mixed borders, as a low hedge, and in foundation plantings. Because of its thorns, avoid high-traffic areas where children and pets play.
How far apart should Rosy Glow Barberry shrubs be planted?
Space plants 4–5 feet apart. For a continuous hedge, plant them 3–4 feet apart.
What color is Rosy Glow Barberry foliage?
New spring growth is rose-pink mottled with deep purple and cream. Leaves mature to a solid reddish-purple through summer, then turn orange-red in fall before dropping. Color is brightest in full sun.
Why is the pink color fading on my Rosy Glow Barberry?
This is normal. The pink and cream mottling appears on new growth and fades to reddish-purple as leaves mature. Light pruning in late winter or early spring encourages fresh growth with the brightest color.
Is Rosy Glow Barberry deer resistant?
Yes. Its thorny stems make it unappealing to deer and rabbits, so it is a good choice for gardens with heavy browsing.
Does Rosy Glow Barberry have thorns?
Yes. Sharp spines grow along the stems. Wear gloves and long sleeves when planting or pruning, and plant it away from areas where children and pets play.
Does Rosy Glow Barberry flower or produce berries?
Yes. Small yellow flowers appear in mid-spring, often tucked beneath the foliage, followed by bright red berries in fall that can last into winter.
Why can't Rosy Glow Barberry ship to some states?
Japanese barberry can spread by seed when birds eat its berries, so several states have banned or restricted its sale. We are unable to ship this shrub to those states.
