PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Rising Sun Redbud Tree, botanically known as Cercis canadensis ‘JN2’, is a striking ornamental tree prized for its brilliant multicolored foliage and early spring flowers. New leaves emerge bright apricot and peach before maturing through shades of orange, gold, and lime green, creating a glowing canopy throughout the growing season. In early spring, rosy pink flowers appear along the bare branches before the leaves emerge, adding another season of interest to this compact landscape tree.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; typically reaches 8–12 feet tall and 8–12 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season. Once established, water every 7–10 days during extended dry periods. The Rising Sun Redbud Tree performs best in full sun but also grows well in partial shade. Full sun typically produces the best flowering and foliage color. In hotter climates, providing afternoon shade and consistent moisture helps maintain healthy foliage.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Minimal pruning is required. Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant to remove dead or crossing branches and maintain a strong structure.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering.

WINTER PROTECTION:
This tree is cold hardy within its recommended zones and typically requires no winter protection once established.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Place the tree so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and apply mulch around the base while keeping it a few inches away from the trunk to prevent moisture buildup.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

The Rising Sun Redbud Tree grows well across much of the United States in USDA Zones 5–9. It thrives in areas with warm summers and cool winters and adapts well to a range of soil types as long as the soil is well-drained. This small ornamental tree performs well in both urban and residential landscapes, especially when protected from extreme drought or poorly drained soils. Full sun encourages the best flowering, while partial shade can help reduce stress in hotter climates.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
