The Red Haven Peach Tree produces juicy yellow-fleshed peaches with attractive red-blushed skin and a classic, balanced sweet flavor. Beautiful pink spring blossoms give way to an abundant summer harvest of peaches that are excellent for fresh eating, baking, canning, freezing, and preserves.

  • Botanical name: Prunus persica ‘Redhaven’
  • Bloom time: Spring
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sunlight with at least 6–8 hours of direct sun per day.

WATER
Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all, so check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball and water when it feels dry. Water slowly and thoroughly, allowing moisture to penetrate the entire root ball and surrounding root zone rather than watering frequently and shallowly. For more in depth information, please see Watering and Sunlight section below.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Best suited for Zones 5–9. Red Haven is a high-chill peach that performs best in climates with cold winters capable of providing approximately 800–950 chill hours followed by warm, sunny summers. It may not reliably flower and fruit in areas with very mild winters.

Note: Red Haven Peach Trees are self-fruitful, so you do not need a second peach variety for fruit production. However, bees and other pollinators still play an important role during flowering, and poor weather during bloom can affect fruit set.

We cannot guarantee the Red Haven Peach Tree you receive will already be flowering or bearing fruit. This depends on the season, tree maturity, pollination, weather, and overall growth pattern.

Red Haven Peach Trees are self-fruitful, so only one tree is needed to produce peaches. A second peach variety is not required for pollination, although bees and other pollinating insects still help move pollen among flowers and support successful fruit set.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Red Haven Peach Tree, scientifically known as Prunus persica ‘Redhaven’, is a classic fruit tree prized for its juicy, yellow-fleshed peaches with an attractive red blush and balanced sweet flavor. Beautiful pink spring blossoms develop into flavorful peaches that are excellent for fresh eating, baking, canning, freezing, and preserves. Self-fruitful and known for dependable production, Red Haven is a longtime favorite for home orchards and backyard gardens.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast growth rate. Reaches approximately 12–15 feet tall and 12–15 feet wide at maturity

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all. Weather, soil type, drainage, plant size, and planting time all affect how quickly a plant dries out.

Use a slow-running hose, soaker hose, or drip system to water the root ball and surrounding root zone thoroughly. Allow the water to penetrate deeply (not just wet the top few inches of soil), and avoid frequent, shallow watering. Before watering again, check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball. If it feels dry, repeat this deep-watering process. If it feels moist or soggy, wait and check again in 1–2 days. Check the soil of newly planted trees and shrubs several times per week, especially during hot, dry, or windy weather. Irrigation run times will vary based on flow rate, soil, and system setup.

Red Haven Peach Trees grow and produce fruit best in full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Plenty of sunlight supports abundant flowering, fruit production, ripening, and the development of flavorful, red-blushed peaches.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Prune Red Haven Peach Trees annually while dormant in late winter to early spring, before vigorous new growth begins. Peach trees produce fruit primarily on one-year-old wood, so regular pruning helps maintain productive new growth.

FERTILIZING
Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Once established, fertilize in spring or early summer when needed using a balanced fertilizer or one formulated for fruit trees. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage vigorous leafy growth at the expense of flowering and fruit production. Do not fertilize in fall or winter.

WINTER PROTECTION
Established Red Haven Peach Trees are cold hardy within their recommended growing range and generally require minimal winter protection. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone to help regulate soil temperature and moisture, keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk. Although Red Haven is adapted to climates with cold winters, its developing flower buds and open blossoms can be damaged by late freezes.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location for your Red Haven Peach Tree that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day and has well-draining soil with good air circulation. Avoid low-lying areas where water or cold air tends to collect. Dig a planting hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Carefully remove the tree from its nursery container and loosen any circling or tightly bound roots. Position the tree so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil, keeping the graft union above the soil line. Backfill using the native soil removed from the planting hole without adding compost, peat moss, sand, rock, or other amendments directly to the hole. Gently firm the soil, then water slowly and deeply throughout the root ball and surrounding soil. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping it several inches away from the trunk. Space Red Haven Peach Trees approximately 12–15 feet apart to provide adequate room for their mature canopies.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

Red Haven Peach Trees grow best in USDA Zones 5–9 and are particularly well suited to regions with reliably cold winters and warm, sunny summers. This is a high-chill peach variety, with reputable sources generally placing its chilling requirement around 800–950 hours, so it may not perform reliably in mild-winter climates that cannot meet its chilling needs. Full sun and warm summer weather support healthy growth, fruit ripening, and flavor development. Like other peaches, the dormant tree is considerably more cold hardy than its flowers, so late spring freezes during bloom can reduce or eliminate a crop for the season.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Red Haven Peach Tree typically reaches approximately 12–15 feet tall and 12–15 feet wide at maturity. Mature size can vary depending on rootstock, climate, pruning, soil, and growing conditions.

Red Haven Peach Trees have a moderate to fast growth rate and can typically grow approximately 1–2 feet per year under favorable growing conditions. Growth rate varies depending on rootstock, sunlight, soil, moisture, climate, pruning, and overall tree health.

Plant your Red Haven Peach Tree in full sun with well-draining soil and good air circulation. Provide at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day and avoid low-lying locations where excess water or cold air tends to collect.

Space Red Haven Peach Trees approximately 12–15 feet apart to accommodate their mature canopies and maintain good sunlight exposure and air circulation.

Red Haven Peach Trees produce attractive pink flowers in spring. Exact bloom timing varies by grow zone and seasonal temperatures, and open flowers can be damaged by late spring freezes.

No. Red Haven is self-fruitful, meaning a single tree can produce peaches without another peach variety nearby. Bees and other pollinating insects can still help support successful fruit set.

A young Red Haven Peach Tree may begin producing peaches approximately 2–4 years after planting, depending on its age at planting, rootstock, climate, pruning, and growing conditions. Fruit production typically increases as the tree becomes established and develops more productive wood.

Red Haven is generally considered an early- to midseason peach, with fruit often ripening in July into early August, depending on climate and location. The variety became so widely grown that Redhaven’s ripening date has historically been used as a reference point when comparing the harvest timing of other peach cultivars.

Red Haven is generally considered a freestone peach when fully ripe, meaning the flesh separates relatively easily from the pit. However, some fruit can behave more like semi-freestone or cling more tightly to the pit, particularly when harvested before full maturity. Utah State specifically notes that some Redhaven fruit may occasionally be clingstone.

Red Haven is a high-chill peach variety. Estimates vary somewhat by source, but approximately 800–950 chill hours is an appropriate range for planning purposes. Insufficient winter chilling can result in irregular bud break, reduced flowering, and poor fruit production.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
