Pugster Pinker® Butterfly Bush packs the flower power of a much larger butterfly bush into a compact, dwarf plant. Rich pink, fragrant flower clusters with tiny orange centers bloom continuously from early summer through frost, attracting butterflies and bees while adding long-lasting color to sunny gardens and containers.

  • Botanical name: Buddleia × 'SMNBDB' PP33,565
  • Bloom time: Early summer through frost
  • Perennial
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for the best flowering and growth.

WATER
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, approximately once or twice per week during establishment. Once established, water during extended hot or dry periods and avoid consistently saturated soil. Watering frequency varies based on climate, rainfall, soil, sunlight, drainage, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Best suited for Zones 5–9. Pugster Pinker® thrives in sunny climates with warm growing seasons and well-draining soil. Its thick, sturdy stems provide improved winter survival compared with many other dwarf butterfly bushes.

Pugster Pinker® Butterfly Bush is intentionally very compact, reaching only about 2 feet tall and 2–2.5 feet wide. Its flowers, however, are full-sized rather than miniature, giving you the floral impact of a much larger butterfly bush on a dwarf plant.

Deadheading isn't required to keep the flowers coming. Pugster Pinker® naturally reblooms and can continue flowering from early summer through frost.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Pugster Pinker® Butterfly Bush, scientifically known as Buddleia × 'SMNBDB', is a compact flowering shrub covered in full-sized, rich pink flower clusters with tiny orange centers. Despite staying only about 2 feet tall, it delivers an impressive display of fragrant blooms from early summer through frost while attracting butterflies and bees. Its sturdy stems, compact habit, and long bloom season make it an excellent choice for borders, containers, mass plantings, and small sunny gardens.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast growth rate. Reaches approximately 2 feet tall and 2–2.5 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water your newly planted Pugster Pinker® Butterfly Bush when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, typically about once or twice per week during establishment. Once established, it has relatively low water needs and can tolerate some dry conditions, but supplemental watering is beneficial during extended periods of heat or drought. Avoid consistently wet or waterlogged soil, as excellent drainage is especially important for butterfly bush. Always check the soil before watering rather than following a fixed schedule, since watering needs vary with climate, rainfall, sunlight, soil type, drainage, and establishment phase.

Pugster Pinker® Butterfly Bush performs best in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Plenty of sunlight encourages healthy growth, abundant flowering, and a dense, compact habit.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Wait until new growth begins to appear in spring before pruning. Remove any dead growth and lightly shape the plant as needed. Avoid pruning in fall, especially in colder climates. Pugster Pinker® blooms on new wood, so spring pruning will not prevent summer flowering.

FERTILIZING
Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Once established, fertilize in spring if needed using a balanced fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing in fall or winter.

WINTER PROTECTION
Pugster Pinker® is hardy in Zones 5–9 and its thick stems help improve winter survival. In colder climates, apply a layer of mulch around the root zone while keeping it away from the stems. Avoid fall pruning, and make sure the planting location drains well through winter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day and has well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Remove the nursery pot and gently loosen any tightly bound or circling roots. Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill using only the native soil removed from the planting hole without adding compost, peat moss, sand, rock, or other amendments directly to the hole. Gently firm the soil, water slowly and deeply, and apply a light layer of mulch around the root zone while keeping it several inches away from the stems.

Space Pugster Pinker® Butterfly Bush approximately 2–2.5 feet apart to accommodate its mature spread.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

Pugster Pinker® Butterfly Bush grows best in USDA Zones 5–9 and thrives in sunny locations with warm growing seasons and well-draining soil. Its thick, sturdy stems provide improved winter survival compared with many other dwarf butterfly bushes, including better performance in Zone 5. Good drainage is especially important during winter, as butterfly bush does not tolerate consistently wet soil around its roots. In Zone 5 and colder areas, fall planting is not recommended.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pugster Pinker® Butterfly Bush reaches approximately 2 feet tall and 2–2.5 feet wide at maturity. Its dwarf, mounded habit makes it ideal for smaller gardens, borders, containers, and mass plantings.

Pugster Pinker® has a moderate to fast growth rate and can typically grow approximately 1–2 feet in a growing season once established under favorable conditions. Because it reaches only about 2 feet tall at maturity, it can quickly develop into its compact mature size.

Plant Pugster Pinker® in full sun with well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day and does not remain consistently wet, particularly during winter.

Space Pugster Pinker® Butterfly Bush approximately 2–2.5 feet apart to accommodate its mature spread. For mass plantings, spacing within this range allows the plants to develop into a full, colorful display.

Pugster Pinker® begins flowering in early summer and continues blooming through fall, often until frost. It is a continuous bloomer and does not require deadheading to keep producing flowers.

No. Deadheading is not required for continuous bloom. The plant naturally continues flowering throughout its bloom season, though spent flowers can be removed if you prefer a tidier appearance.

Wait until new growth begins to emerge in spring before pruning. At that point, remove dead growth and lightly shape the plant as needed. Avoid pruning in fall, particularly in colder climates.

Pugster Pinker® blooms on new wood, meaning its flowers develop on growth produced during the current season. This allows it to flower even after spring pruning or winter dieback.

Yes. Pugster Pinker® is considered deer resistant, although no plant can be guaranteed completely deer-proof when food is scarce. It is also resistant to rabbit browsing.

Yes. Its compact size makes Pugster Pinker® an excellent choice for outdoor containers. Use a container with good drainage and monitor soil moisture more frequently than you would for a plant growing in the ground.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
