The Pink Lady Apple Tree produces crisp, juicy apples known for their beautiful pink-red coloring and refreshing balance of sweetness and tartness. Fragrant spring blossoms develop into flavorful late-season apples, making this semi-dwarf fruit tree an attractive and productive addition to home orchards and backyard gardens.

  • Botanical name: Malus domestica ‘Cripps Pink’
  • Bloom time: Spring
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sunlight with at least 6–8 hours of direct sun per day.

WATER
Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all, so check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball and water when it feels dry. Water slowly and thoroughly, allowing moisture to penetrate the entire root ball and surrounding root zone rather than watering frequently and shallowly. For more in depth information, please see Watering and Sunlight section below.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Best suited for Zones 5–8, particularly areas with a long, warm growing season. Pink Lady Apple Trees are late-ripening and need sufficient warmth and time in fall for their apples to fully mature. They perform best in sunny locations with well-draining soil and good air circulation.

Pink Lady is a very late-ripening apple variety, so it performs best in climates with a long growing season. In colder areas with early fall freezes, fruit may not have enough time to fully develop its characteristic color and sweet-tart flavor.

*We cannot guarantee the Pink Lady Apple Tree you receive will already be flowering or bearing fruit. This depends on the season, tree maturity, pollination, and overall growth pattern.

Pink Lady Apple Trees perform best with cross-pollination from a different compatible apple variety with an overlapping bloom period. Planting a suitable pollinator nearby, such as Gala, Fuji, Golden Delicious, or another compatible apple, can significantly improve fruit set and apple production.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Pink Lady Apple Tree, scientifically known as Malus domestica ‘Cripps Pink’, is a popular fruit tree prized for its crisp, juicy apples with a distinctive sweet-tart flavor. Its beautiful pink-red apples develop over a yellow-green background and are excellent for fresh eating, baking, salads, and desserts. With attractive spring blossoms followed by a late-season apple harvest, the Pink Lady Apple Tree is an excellent choice for home orchards, edible landscapes, and backyard gardens.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Reaches approximately 12–15 feet tall and 12–15 feet wide at maturity as a semi-dwarf tree.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all. Weather, soil type, drainage, plant size, and planting time all affect how quickly a plant dries out.

Use a slow-running hose, soaker hose, or drip system to water the root ball and surrounding root zone thoroughly. Allow the water to penetrate deeply (not just wet the top few inches of soil), and avoid frequent, shallow watering. Before watering again, check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball. If it feels dry, repeat this deep-watering process. If it feels moist or soggy, wait and check again in 1–2 days. Check the soil of newly planted trees and shrubs several times per week, especially during hot, dry, or windy weather. Irrigation run times will vary based on flow rate, soil, and system setup.

Pink Lady Apple Trees grow and produce fruit best in full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day. A sunny, open location also promotes better fruit development and air circulation.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Prune your Pink Lady Apple Tree in late winter or early spring while the tree is dormant. Remove dead, damaged, diseased, crossing, or inward-growing branches and maintain an open canopy that allows sunlight and airflow through the tree. Annual pruning can help maintain a manageable tree size while encouraging healthy flowering and fruit production.

FERTILIZING
Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Once established, fertilize in spring when needed with a balanced fertilizer or one formulated for fruit trees. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage vigorous foliage growth at the expense of fruit production, and avoid fertilizing in fall or winter.

WINTER PROTECTION
Established Pink Lady Apple Trees are cold hardy within their recommended growing range and typically require minimal winter protection. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone to help insulate the roots and regulate soil moisture, keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk. Young trees may benefit from trunk protection in areas prone to winter sunscald, rodent damage, or significant temperature fluctuations.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location for your Pink Lady Apple Tree that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day and has well-draining soil with good air circulation. Dig a planting hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Carefully remove the tree from its nursery container and loosen any circling or tightly bound roots. Position the tree so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil, making sure the graft union remains above the soil line. Backfill with the native soil removed from the planting hole without adding compost, peat moss, sand, or other amendments directly to the hole. Gently firm the soil and water slowly and deeply throughout the root ball and surrounding soil. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping it several inches away from the trunk. For semi-dwarf Pink Lady Apple Trees, allow approximately 12–15 feet between trees to accommodate their mature canopy.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-8

Pink Lady Apple Trees grow well in USDA Zones 5–8, but they perform best in areas with a long, warm growing season that allows their late-ripening fruit to fully mature. The tree has a relatively moderate-to-low winter chill requirement compared with many apple varieties, with published estimates generally around 400–650 chill hours. Because Pink Lady apples ripen very late in the season, locations with early fall freezes may not provide enough time for the fruit to develop its best color and flavor. Plant in full sun with well-draining soil and good air circulation for healthy growth and fruit production.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

A semi-dwarf Pink Lady Apple Tree typically reaches approximately 12–15 feet tall and 12–15 feet wide at maturity. Mature size can vary depending on the rootstock, climate, soil, pruning, and growing conditions.

Pink Lady Apple Trees have a moderate growth rate, typically growing approximately 12–24 inches per year under good growing conditions. Growth rate can vary based on rootstock, sunlight, soil, watering, climate, and overall tree health.

Plant your Pink Lady Apple Tree in a location that receives full sun, or at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day, with well-draining soil and good air circulation. Because Pink Lady is a very late-ripening apple, a sunny location in an area with a long growing season is especially beneficial for properly ripening the fruit

Space semi-dwarf Pink Lady Apple Trees approximately 12–15 feet apart. Adequate spacing gives the mature canopy room to develop while promoting better sunlight exposure and airflow.

Pink Lady Apple Trees bloom in spring, generally during the early-to-mid or midseason apple bloom period. Exact flowering time varies by grow zone, local climate, and seasonal weather.

Planting a compatible apple variety nearby is recommended for the best and most reliable fruit production. Pink Lady may demonstrate some self-fruitfulness under certain growing conditions, but cross-pollination generally improves fruit set and overall production.

Good pollination partners include compatible apple varieties with overlapping bloom periods, such as Gala, Fuji, Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, and Red Delicious. The specific pollinator should bloom at approximately the same time as Pink Lady

A young semi-dwarf Pink Lady Apple Tree may begin producing apples within approximately 2–4 years after planting, depending on the tree’s age, rootstock, growing conditions, pollination, and care. Fruit production typically becomes heavier as the tree matures.

Pink Lady is a late to very late-season apple, typically ripening in October into November in many U.S. growing regions. Exact harvest time varies considerably by climate and location. The apples require a relatively long growing season to develop their characteristic pink-red color, crisp texture, and balanced sweet-tart flavor.

Pink Lady Apple Trees have a relatively low-to-moderate chilling requirement. Published recommendations vary by source and growing system, but approximately 400–650 chill hours is a reasonable range for Pink Lady.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
