Picture Purrfect Catmint produces large blue-purple flowers above aromatic green foliage, creating a colorful, compact display in sunny gardens and landscapes. Blooming earlier than many other catmint varieties, this low-maintenance perennial attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds while offering excellent deer and rabbit resistance.

  • Botanical name: Nepeta ‘Picture Purrfect’ PP34502
  • Bloom time: Late spring through fall
  • Herbaceous perennial
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sunlight. Provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for abundant flowers and compact growth.

WATER
Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Once established, water primarily during prolonged hot or dry periods; frequency will vary with climate, rainfall, and soil drainage.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Hardy in USDA Grow Zones 3–8. Picture Purrfect Catmint prefers sunny conditions, well-drained soil, and moderate to dry climates. It tolerates cold winters and summer heat but should not be planted in consistently wet or poorly drained soil.

Note: Picture Purrfect Catmint is a perennial that naturally dies back after freezing temperatures and returns from its roots in spring.

This plant is grown in Monrovia’s SUPERONE™ container, a true 1-gallon pot that provides more root volume and supports more top growth than the nursery industry’s standard “1-gallon” (#1) container, which typically holds only about 3 quarts.

Because nursery pot sizes are trade designations rather than exact measurements, two plants labeled “1 gallon” may arrive in noticeably different containers. SUPERONE™ plants are larger and more established, which is reflected in their price.

Please note: If your order includes both SUPERONE™ and standard #1 plants, the containers may differ in size even though both products are listed in the 1-gallon category. This is expected and does not mean the smaller plant was sent in the wrong size.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Picture Purrfect Catmint, scientifically known as Nepeta ‘Picture Purrfect’, is a compact flowering perennial prized for its large blue-purple flowers and aromatic green foliage. Blooming about two weeks earlier than many other catmint varieties, this low-maintenance perennial attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds while resisting deer and rabbits. Its tidy, spreading habit and long bloom season make Picture Purrfect Catmint an excellent choice for sunny borders, pollinator gardens, pathways, and container gardens.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast growth rate. Reaches approximately 10–12 inches tall and 22–24 inches wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water newly planted Picture Purrfect Catmint deeply with approximately 1 inch of water per week during its first growing season, dividing this into one or two applications when rainfall is insufficient. Once established, this drought-tolerant catmint generally needs supplemental water only during prolonged hot, dry periods. Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry before watering again, and avoid consistently soggy soil. Watering frequency will vary according to USDA grow zone, local climate, rainfall, temperature, soil type, and whether the plant is grown in the ground or a container.

Plant Picture Purrfect Catmint in a location receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for dense growth and abundant blue-purple flowers. It can tolerate light partial shade, but excessive shade may produce fewer blooms and looser growth.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Trim away old stems in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. After the first major flush of blooms, shear the plant back by approximately one-third to remove faded flowers, maintain its compact mound, and encourage a fresh round of Picture Purrfect Catmint blooms.

FERTILIZING
Picture Purrfect Catmint performs best with minimal fertilizer and may become floppy in overly rich soil. Apply a light layer of compost in spring or use a small amount of balanced, slow-release fertilizer only if growth is weak or the soil is nutrient-poor; routine heavy feeding is unnecessary. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION
In most of USDA Zones 3–8, this hardy perennial requires little winter protection once established. Leave some foliage in place through winter, then cut it back before spring growth begins. In the coldest zones, apply a light layer of mulch after the ground freezes, keeping mulch away from the crown; containers may need additional insulation because their roots are more exposed.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Select a sunny location with well-drained soil, avoiding low areas that remain wet after rainfall. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than its height. Remove the Picture Purrfect Catmint from its container, gently loosen circling roots, and position the crown level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with the original soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly to settle the roots. Space plants about 22–24 inches apart to accommodate their mature spread and encourage good air circulation. Keep the soil evenly moist during establishment, then reduce watering as the plant develops its drought tolerance.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 3–8

Picture Purrfect Catmint is a cold-hardy perennial suited to USDA Zones 3 through 8, tolerating winter temperatures as low as approximately -40°F once established. In cooler regions, it performs best in full sun and returns from dormancy each spring. In warmer zones, light afternoon shade may help reduce heat stress, although abundant sunlight encourages the strongest flowering. Excellent drainage is essential in every zone, especially where winters are wet.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Picture Purrfect Catmint typically reaches 10–12 inches tall and 22–24 inches wide at maturity. Its compact, mounded habit works well along pathways and at the front of perennial borders.

Picture Purrfect Catmint has a moderate to fast growth rate under favorable conditions. It may approach its mature size within one to two growing seasons, although growth varies with climate, soil, and planting time.

Plant Picture Purrfect Catmint near the front of a sunny border, beside a walkway, in a pollinator garden, or as a flowering ground-cover accent. Choose a location where its low, spreading habit will not be hidden by taller plants.

Space plants approximately 22–24 inches apart, measuring from the center of each plant. For a fuller mass planting, they may be positioned slightly closer while still allowing adequate air circulation.

Picture Purrfect Catmint begins flowering in late spring, approximately two weeks earlier than many other catmint varieties. Its large blue-purple flowers can continue through summer and into fall, particularly when spent blooms are trimmed away.

Picture Purrfect Catmint has a spreading, mounded habit, but it is not generally considered an aggressive garden spreader like culinary mint. It gradually expands from the crown and can be divided if it becomes wider than desired.

Yes. Its compact size makes Picture Purrfect Catmint suitable for patio containers and mixed perennial planters. Select a container with drainage holes and avoid allowing the potting soil to remain consistently wet.

Yes. Its blue-purple flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making this compact Nepeta a valuable addition to pollinator gardens and wildlife-friendly landscapes.

No. Picture Purrfect Catmint is an ornamental Nepeta hybrid selected for its compact growth and showy flowers, while true catnip is generally identified as Nepeta cataria. Some cats may still be attracted to or interested in catmint’s aromatic foliage.

Picture Purrfect Catmint pairs beautifully with roses, perennial salvia, ornamental grasses, boxwoods, yarrow, coreopsis, and coneflowers. Its cool blue-purple flowers and low-growing habit provide an attractive contrast to taller perennials with yellow, pink, white, or warm-toned flowers.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
