Planting instructions
Choose a planting location with full sun to partial sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the container so the tree sits at the same level it was growing previously. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.
Watering & sunlight
Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all. Weather, soil type, drainage, plant size, and planting time all affect how quickly a plant dries out.

Use a slow-running hose, soaker hose, or drip system to water the root ball and surrounding root zone thoroughly. Allow the water to penetrate deeply (not just wet the top few inches of soil), and avoid frequent, shallow watering.

Before watering again, check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball. If it feels dry, repeat this deep-watering process. If it feels moist or soggy, wait and check again in 1–2 days. Check the soil of newly planted trees and shrubs several times per week, especially during hot, dry, or windy weather.

Irrigation run times will vary based on flow rate, soil, and system setup.

Norway Spruce grows best in full sun, though it can tolerate partial sun.
Care guide

PRUNING:
Minimal pruning is required. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as Norway Spruce naturally maintains its pyramidal shape.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release evergreen fertilizer in early spring if needed to support healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Norway Spruce is extremely cold hardy and typically requires no winter protection once established. Applying 2–3 inches of mulch around the base can help protect roots and retain moisture, especially for young trees.

Answered by Simply Trees plant experts
How big does Norway Spruce Tree get?
Norway Spruce Trees typically grow 40–60 feet tall and 25–30 feet wide, forming a large evergreen canopy.
How fast does Norway Spruce Tree grow?
This tree has a fast growth rate, typically growing about 2–3 feet per year.
Where is the best place to plant Norway Spruce Tree?
Plant in a full sun location with well-draining soil and enough space for its large mature size.
How far apart should I plant Norway Spruce Trees?
Plant about 20–25 feet apart for spacing, or closer if planting for a privacy screen.
Is Norway Spruce good for privacy?
Yes. Its dense evergreen foliage and fast growth make it an excellent choice for privacy screens and windbreaks.
Does Norway Spruce tolerate wind?
Yes. It is commonly used as a windbreak tree due to its strong structure and dense growth.
Can Norway Spruce grow in poor or clay soil?
Yes. Norway Spruce is fairly adaptable and can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay, as long as the soil is well-draining and not consistently waterlogged.
Are Norway Spruce roots invasive or damaging?
No. Norway Spruce has a non-invasive, spreading root system, but due to its large size, it should still be planted at least 15–20 feet away from structures, driveways, or foundations.
Does Norway Spruce produce pine cones, and are they messy?
Yes. Norway Spruce produces long, hanging pine cones, typically 4–6 inches in length. These cones usually drop in fall, but they are not considered overly messy and are easy to clean up. Many homeowners actually enjoy their ornamental look, especially during the winter months or for seasonal decor.
Will deer or wildlife bother Norway Spruce trees?
Norway Spruce is generally considered deer resistant, especially once established. While young trees may experience occasional browsing in areas with heavy deer pressure, it is not a preferred food source, making it a reliable option for homeowners in deer-prone areas.
