PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Nikko Blue Hydrangea, botanically known as Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Nikko Blue’, is a classic flowering shrub loved for its large, round clusters of vibrant blue blooms. This deciduous hydrangea produces showy flowers throughout summer and adds rich color to garden beds, borders, and foundation plantings. Its lush green foliage and abundant blooms make it one of the most popular hydrangeas for traditional garden landscapes.

SEASONAL DORMANCY
Perennial plants may arrive cut back or dormant depending on the season. It is normal for early spring shipments to have minimal foliage or only stems. Once planted, new growth will emerge as the plant enters its active growing season.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; typically reaches 4–6 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, water when the soil begins to dry, typically every 5–7 days depending on your local climate and weather. Nikko Blue Hydrangea prefers partial sun with protection from intense afternoon sunlight. Morning sun with afternoon shade helps maintain healthy foliage and vibrant blooms.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Nikko Blue Hydrangea blooms on old wood, so prune immediately after flowering if shaping is needed. Avoid heavy pruning in fall or early spring, which may remove next season’s flower buds.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs in early spring to encourage healthy growth and blooms.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In colder regions, mulch around the base of the plant to protect roots and flower buds from extreme winter temperatures.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a hole that is twice as wide and about the same depth as the root ball. Place the Nikko Blue Hydrangea in the hole so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil, gently firming it around the roots, and water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the stem to prevent excess moisture buildup.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 6-9

Nikko Blue Hydrangea grows best in temperate climates with moderate summers and mild winters. It thrives in regions where it can receive morning sun and afternoon shade, helping protect its foliage and blooms from intense heat. Consistent moisture and well-draining soil are important for healthy growth and strong flowering performance.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
