PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Nantucket Blue™ Hydrangea, scientifically known as Hydrangea macrophylla ‘GRENAN’, is a beautiful bigleaf hydrangea known for its large, vibrant blue mophead blooms and lush green foliage. This flowering shrub produces abundant clusters of flowers throughout the summer, bringing bright color and classic garden charm to landscapes. With its compact growth habit and showy blooms, Nantucket Blue™ Hydrangea is a great choice for garden beds, borders, foundation plantings, and container gardens.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Nantucket Blue™ Hydrangea typically grows 1–2 feet per year and reaches 3–5 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Hydrangeas prefer consistently moist soil. Water deeply once or twice per week, especially during hot weather or dry conditions. Newly planted shrubs may require more frequent watering while establishing. Watering needs vary depending on soil type, rainfall, temperature, and local climate.

Nantucket Blue™ Hydrangea performs best in partial sun with morning sunlight and protection from strong afternoon sun, especially in warmer climates.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Nantucket Blue™ Hydrangea typically blooms on old wood, meaning flower buds form on the previous season’s growth. Prune lightly after flowering if needed to shape the plant and remove dead or damaged branches.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs in early spring to encourage healthy growth and abundant blooms.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In colder regions within its growing range, applying 2–3 inches of mulch around the base of the plant can help protect roots and flower buds during winter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with partial sun and well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and approximately the same depth as the container so the plant sits at the same level it was growing previously. Place the shrub in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base of the plant to conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 6-9

Nantucket Blue™ Hydrangea grows well in USDA Zones 6–9 and thrives in climates with mild winters and moderate summer temperatures. In warmer regions, partial shade helps protect the plant from intense afternoon sun. In cooler parts of its range, hydrangeas can tolerate more direct sunlight. Consistent moisture and well-draining soil help maintain healthy growth and vibrant blooms.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
