Planting instructions
Choose a planting location with full sun and well-draining soil, with room for the tree to spread 10–15 feet wide. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the nursery container so the tree sits at the same level it was growing previously. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.
Watering & sunlight
Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all. Weather, soil type, drainage, plant size, and planting time all affect how quickly a plant dries out.

Use a slow-running hose, soaker hose, or drip system to water the root ball and surrounding root zone thoroughly. Allow the water to penetrate deeply (not just wet the top few inches of soil), and avoid frequent, shallow watering.

Before watering again, check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball. If it feels dry, repeat this deep-watering process. If it feels moist or soggy, wait and check again in 1–2 days. Check the soil of newly planted trees and shrubs several times per week, especially during hot, dry, or windy weather.

Irrigation run times will vary based on flow rate, soil, and system setup.

Care guide

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter or early spring while the tree is dormant to remove dead or crossing branches and shape the canopy. Minimal pruning is usually needed.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth and strong flowering. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Within Zones 7–9, this crape myrtle typically requires no special winter protection. In Zone 7, a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base helps protect the roots during hard freezes.

Answered by Simply Trees plant experts
How big does Miss Frances Crape Myrtle get?
Miss Frances Crape Myrtle typically grows 15–20 feet tall and 10–15 feet wide, forming a rounded, spreading flowering tree.
How fast does Miss Frances Crape Myrtle grow?
This crape myrtle has a moderate growth rate, usually growing about 1–2 feet per year.
Where is the best place to plant Miss Frances Crape Myrtle?
Plant this tree in a full sun location with well-draining soil and enough room for its spreading canopy. It works well as a specimen tree, as an accent near patios and entryways, or mass planted as a flowering screen.
How far apart should I plant Miss Frances Crape Myrtle trees?
Plant trees about 10–15 feet apart to give each canopy room to develop. For a denser flowering screen, plant them 6–8 feet apart.
When does Miss Frances Crape Myrtle bloom?
This crape myrtle typically blooms from early summer through late summer, producing large clusters of deep red flowers. Removing spent flower clusters can encourage additional blooms later in the season.
Does Miss Frances Crape Myrtle have fall color or interesting bark?
Yes. New leaves emerge with a reddish tint, mature to a glossy dark green, and turn maroon in fall. As the tree matures, its bark peels to reveal a smooth gray-orange trunk that adds interest through winter.
Is Miss Frances Crape Myrtle disease resistant?
Yes. Miss Frances has good resistance to powdery mildew and other common crape myrtle diseases, especially when planted in full sun with good air circulation.
Do crape myrtles bloom every year?
Yes. Crape myrtles bloom annually on new growth, meaning they produce flowers each year as new branches develop.
Does Miss Frances Crape Myrtle attract pollinators?
Yes. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators during the summer blooming season.
Do I need to prune Miss Frances Crape Myrtle?
Crape myrtles generally require minimal pruning. If needed, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins to remove dead branches or shape the tree. Because crape myrtles bloom on new growth, light pruning can encourage strong flowering during the summer season. Avoid heavy pruning or topping, as the tree naturally develops an attractive canopy on its own.
