Little Quick Fire® Panicle Hydrangea is a compact version of the beloved Quick Fire® Hydrangea, producing full-sized white flower panicles nearly a month earlier than most panicle hydrangeas. As the season progresses, the blooms transition from creamy white to vibrant pink and rosy-red, providing months of color. Its compact size, dependable flowering, and easy-care nature make it a beautiful choice for landscapes large and small.

  • Botanical name: Hydrangea paniculata 'SMHPLQF'
  • Bloom time: Early summer through fall
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sun to part sun.

WATER
Water deeply when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. During establishment, this is typically once or twice per week. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods. Watering frequency varies depending on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Hardy in USDA Zones 3–8. Little Quick Fire thrives in a wide range of climates and is an excellent choice for foundation plantings, borders, mass plantings, and containers.

Note: Little Quick Fire blooms on new wood, so you don't have to worry about flower buds being damaged by harsh winters. It also begins blooming up to a month earlier than most other panicle hydrangeas, extending your hydrangea season.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Little Quick Fire® Panicle Hydrangea, scientifically known as Hydrangea paniculata 'SMHPLQF', is a compact, early-blooming hydrangea that delivers full-sized white flower panicles on a smaller, easy-to-manage shrub. Blooming up to a month earlier than most panicle hydrangeas, its flowers gradually transition from white to rich pink and rosy-red as the season progresses. Its long bloom season, reliable flowering, and compact habit make it an excellent choice for foundation plantings, mixed borders, hedges, containers, and small landscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate-growing deciduous flowering shrub. Typically reaches approximately 3–5 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. During establishment, this is typically once or twice per week, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Once established, continue watering during prolonged dry periods to encourage the best flowering. Watering frequency will vary depending on climate, soil type, rainfall, sunlight exposure, and establishment phase.

Little Quick Fire grows best in full sun to part sun, receiving at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In hotter climates, afternoon shade can help reduce stress during the hottest part of summer.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Since Little Quick Fire blooms on new wood, annual pruning encourages vigorous new growth and abundant flowers.

FERTILIZING
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if desired to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION
Little Quick Fire is exceptionally cold hardy throughout its growing range. Apply mulch around the base to help conserve moisture and insulate the roots during winter, particularly during the first growing season.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Plant Little Quick Fire in full sun to part sun with well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and no deeper than the rootball itself. Position the top of the rootball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil, backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch while keeping it several inches away from the stems.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 3-8

Little Quick Fire Panicle Hydrangea thrives across a wide range of climates and performs best in full sun to part sun with well-draining soil. It blooms on new wood, so it flowers reliably every year—even after harsh winters or annual pruning. Proven Winners

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
