Let’s Dance Sky View® Hydrangea is a compact reblooming hydrangea with beautiful mophead flowers that can range from pink and lavender to brilliant sky blue depending on soil conditions. Blooming on both old and new wood, it provides a long-lasting flower display from summer through fall on a compact, mounded plant.

  • Botanical name: Hydrangea macrophylla × serrata 'SMNHSME' USPP 34,327
  • Bloom time: Summer through fall
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Grows in partial sun to full sun, approximately 4–6+ hours of sunlight per day. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal in warmer climates.

WATER
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, approximately once or twice per week during establishment. Keep the soil consistently moist but not saturated, particularly during summer heat. Watering frequency varies based on climate, rainfall, soil, sunlight, drainage, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Best suited for Zones 4–9. Its strong bud hardiness and ability to bloom on both old and new growth help it perform across a wide range of climates, while afternoon shade is beneficial in hotter regions.

*Let’s Dance Sky View® bloom color at shipment is not guaranteed. Flower color is influenced by soil chemistry, and the plant requires acidic soil with available aluminum to develop its signature blue coloring. Under the right conditions, flowers can emerge sky blue with a honeydew-green eye before maturing to a fuller blue. In conditions that do not support blue coloration, flowers may remain pink or develop purple/lavender tones.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Let’s Dance Sky View® Hydrangea, scientifically known as Hydrangea macrophylla × serrata 'SMNHSME', is a compact reblooming hydrangea prized for its abundant mophead flowers and exceptionally long bloom season. Its flowers can range from pink and lavender to spectacular sky blue depending on soil conditions, with blue blooms opening around a honeydew-green center before maturing to a fuller blue. Its compact, mounded habit makes it an excellent choice for borders, foundation plantings, containers, and small gardens.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast growth rate. Reaches approximately 2–3 feet tall and 2–4 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water your newly planted Let’s Dance Sky View® Hydrangea when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, typically about once or twice per week during establishment. Hydrangeas prefer consistent moisture, particularly during hot weather, but the soil should not remain constantly saturated. Once established, continue watering during extended hot or dry periods. There is no fixed watering schedule, so always check the soil first and adjust based on climate, rainfall, temperature, sunlight exposure, soil type, drainage, and establishment phase.

Let’s Dance Sky View® grows in partial sun to full sun, but the ideal exposure varies by climate. In warmer regions, morning sunlight followed by afternoon shade can help protect the plant from excessive heat, while plants in cooler climates can generally tolerate more direct sunlight.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Very little pruning is necessary. If needed, lightly trim after the first flush of flowers in early summer and remove dead or damaged stems. Avoid heavy pruning so you preserve as many potential flower buds as possible.

FERTILIZING
Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Once established, apply a balanced fertilizer in spring or early summer if needed. Avoid fertilizing in fall or winter.

WINTER PROTECTION
Let’s Dance Sky View® is hardy to Zone 4 and has been selected for strong flower-bud survival through challenging weather. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone in colder climates, keeping it several inches away from the stems. Avoid pruning healthy stems back in fall, as they may carry flower buds for the following season.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location with partial sun to full sun and moist, well-draining soil. In warmer climates, morning sun and afternoon shade are preferred. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Remove the nursery pot and gently loosen any tightly bound or circling roots. Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill using only the native soil removed from the planting hole without adding compost, peat moss, sand, rock, or other amendments directly to the hole. Gently firm the soil and water slowly and deeply throughout the root ball and surrounding soil. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping mulch several inches away from the stems.

Space Let’s Dance Sky View® Hydrangeas approximately 2–4 feet apart, depending on how quickly you want the plants to visually fill together.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-9

Let’s Dance Sky View® Hydrangea grows well across USDA Zones 4–9, giving it impressive versatility from cold northern climates to warmer southern regions. It was selected for its ability to preserve old-wood flower buds through challenging weather while also quickly producing flowers on new growth. This helps provide more reliable flowering even where late freezes or winter conditions can interfere with traditional bigleaf hydrangeas. In warmer zones, provide afternoon shade and consistent moisture to reduce heat stress.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Let’s Dance Sky View® Hydrangea reaches approximately 2–3 feet tall and 2–4 feet wide at maturity. Its compact, mounded habit makes it an excellent choice for smaller gardens, borders, foundation plantings, and containers.

Let’s Dance Sky View® has a moderate to fast growth rate and can typically add approximately 1–2 feet of new growth during a growing season under favorable conditions. Its exact growth rate varies with climate, sunlight, moisture, soil, and overall plant health. The cultivar was specifically selected for vigorous growth and its ability to quickly produce new flowers.

Plant Let’s Dance Sky View® in partial sun to full sun with moist, well-draining soil. In warmer climates, a location receiving morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal. Its compact size works well near foundations, along walkways, in mixed borders, or in decorative containers.

Space plants approximately 2–4 feet apart, center to center, depending on the finished look you want. Space toward the closer end of the range for a fuller mass planting and farther apart if you want more separation between mature shrubs.

Let’s Dance Sky View® blooms from summer through fall. Its ability to flower on both old and new wood allows it to continually produce flowers throughout the growing season.

It blooms on both old and new wood. Overwintered stems can provide the first round of flowers, while new growth continues developing additional blooms as the season progresses.

Flower color can range from pink and lavender-purple to sky blue, depending primarily on soil chemistry and aluminum availability. Under conditions favorable for blue flowers, blooms can open sky blue with a honeydew-green center and mature to a fuller sky blue.

Blue flowers require acidic soil with available aluminum. This variety was specifically selected for its ability to turn blue relatively easily under suitable conditions. Soil chemistry should be adjusted gradually rather than attempting to dramatically lower the pH all at once

Not necessarily. This variety ships pink, and the flower color it produces in your landscape will depend on your soil conditions. Acidic soil with available aluminum encourages blue flowers, while other conditions can result in pink or purple tones.

Very little pruning is required. If shaping is necessary, lightly trim the plant after its early summer flowering and remove dead or damaged stems. Avoid unnecessary heavy pruning because healthy stems can carry flower buds.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
