Planting instructions
Choose a location in full sun with well-draining soil and room for the tree to spread 15–20 feet wide. Avoid low spots where water collects. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the nursery container. Place the tree, backfill with native soil, and gently firm to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting and apply 2–3 inches of mulch, keeping it a few inches from the trunk.
Watering & sunlight
Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all. Weather, soil type, drainage, plant size, and planting time all affect how quickly a plant dries out.

Use a slow-running hose, soaker hose, or drip system to water the root ball and surrounding root zone thoroughly. Allow the water to penetrate deeply (not just wet the top few inches of soil), and avoid frequent, shallow watering.

Before watering again, check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball. If it feels dry, repeat this deep-watering process. If it feels moist or soggy, wait and check again in 1–2 days. Check the soil of newly planted trees and shrubs several times per week, especially during hot, dry, or windy weather.

Irrigation run times will vary based on flow rate, soil, and system setup.

Hoopsii Spruce grows best in full sun, which keeps it dense and brings out the most intense blue color.
Care guide

PRUNING:
Rarely needed. If shaping is desired, trim new growth in spring as the new candles expand. Young trees may need a stake to help establish a single, straight leader.

FERTILIZING:
Usually unnecessary. If needed, apply a slow-release fertilizer for evergreens in early spring. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Extremely cold hardy and typically needs no special winter protection. Water deeply in fall before the ground freezes to help prevent winter burn.

Answered by Simply Trees plant experts
How big does Hoopsii Spruce get?
Hoopsii Spruce typically reaches 30–50 feet tall and 15–20 feet wide at maturity, growing at a slow to moderate rate.
How fast does Hoopsii Spruce grow?
Hoopsii Spruce has a slow to moderate growth rate, steadily developing its dense, pyramidal shape over time.
Where is the best place to plant Hoopsii Spruce?
Plant it in full sun with well-draining soil, good air circulation, and room to spread 15–20 feet wide. Avoid low spots where water collects. It makes a striking front-yard specimen, windbreak, or living Christmas tree.
How far apart should I plant Hoopsii Spruce?
Space trees about 15–20 feet apart so each tree keeps its full, pyramidal shape and good air circulation, which helps keep needles healthy.
Does Hoopsii Spruce stay blue all year?
Yes. Hoopsii is widely considered one of the bluest Colorado blue spruces, and its silvery-blue needles hold their color all year. Full sun brings out the most intense blue.
Is Hoopsii Spruce good for a windbreak or privacy screen?
Yes. Its dense, evergreen branches and strong wind tolerance make it a great windbreak or screen, and unlike deciduous trees, it provides coverage all year long.
Does Hoopsii Spruce grow well in hot climates?
It's hardy in USDA Zones 3–8 and performs best where summers aren't excessively hot and humid. In hot, humid regions, Colorado spruces can be more prone to needle diseases and spider mites, so full sun, well-draining soil, and good air circulation are especially important.
Are Hoopsii Spruce needles sharp?
Yes. Like other Colorado blue spruces, Hoopsii has stiff, sharp-tipped needles. Consider placing it a few feet back from walkways, play areas, and entryways.
Can Hoopsii Spruce be used as a living Christmas tree?
Yes. Its classic pyramidal shape, sturdy horizontal branches, and silvery-blue color make it a beautiful living Christmas tree in the landscape.
Does Hoopsii Spruce need a lot of maintenance?
No. Pruning is rarely needed, and fertilizer is usually unnecessary. Young trees may benefit from a stake to establish a straight leader, and a deep watering in fall before the ground freezes helps prevent winter burn.
