Hollywood Juniper is a unique evergreen specimen tree known for its naturally twisting branches, graceful upright habit, and attractive blue-green foliage. No two trees develop exactly alike, giving each one its own sculptural character. Its drought tolerance, evergreen beauty, and architectural form make it a favorite for Japanese-inspired gardens, Mediterranean landscapes, entryways, and landscape focal points.

  • Botanical name: Juniperus chinensis ‘Kaizuka’
  • Other common names: Chinese Juniper, Twisted Juniper, Torulosa Juniper
  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun.

WATER:
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 5–9. Hollywood Juniper thrives in sunny locations with well-draining soil and performs exceptionally well in warm, dry climates, coastal landscapes, and water-wise gardens.

Note: Every Hollywood Juniper develops its own naturally twisting branch structure, so no two trees will look exactly alike.

Its sculptural form becomes even more dramatic as it matures, making it a living work of art in the landscape.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Hollywood Juniper, scientifically known as Juniperus chinensis ‘Kaizuka’, is a distinctive evergreen conifer admired for its naturally twisting branches, graceful upright form, and rich blue-green foliage. Each tree develops its own unique sculptural silhouette, making it a striking focal point in landscapes, entryways, and Japanese-inspired gardens. Its drought tolerance, low-maintenance nature, and year-round evergreen color make it one of the most recognizable ornamental junipers available.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate-growing evergreen conifer. Typically reaches approximately 15–25 feet tall and 8–15 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. Hollywood Juniper is drought tolerant once mature but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

Hollywood Juniper grows best in full sun. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily promotes dense foliage, healthy growth, and the tree’s signature twisting branch structure.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Hollywood Juniper requires very little pruning and naturally develops its characteristic sculptural form. Prune only as needed to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches or to lightly shape the tree while preserving its naturally twisting appearance.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if desired to encourage healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Established junipers typically require very little supplemental fertilization.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Hollywood Juniper is cold hardy throughout its recommended growing range and generally requires little winter protection once established. Applying mulch around the base helps conserve moisture and insulate the root zone during the first winter after planting.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Plant Hollywood Juniper in a location that receives full sun and has well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and position the top of the rootball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil, water thoroughly after planting, and apply mulch around the base while keeping it several inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

Hollywood Juniper thrives across a wide range of climates and performs especially well in sunny locations with well-draining soil. It tolerates summer heat, drought, wind, and coastal conditions once established, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance landscapes. Its unique sculptural branching habit adds year-round architectural interest to Mediterranean, contemporary, Japanese-inspired, and water-wise gardens.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
