PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Golden Hinoki Cypress ‘Crippsii’, scientifically known as Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Crippsii’, is a slow-growing evergreen conifer prized for its soft golden-yellow foliage and elegant pyramidal form. This standout specimen tree adds year-round color, texture, and structure to landscapes while maintaining a refined appearance with minimal maintenance. Its bright foliage and graceful branching make it a favorite for foundation plantings, Japanese-inspired gardens, and focal-point landscape designs.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Slow-growing evergreen conifer. Typically reaches approximately 8-10 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. Golden Hinoki Cypress prefers consistent moisture but should not be planted in overly wet or poorly drained soils. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

Golden Hinoki Cypress grows best in full sun to partial shade. Plants grown in sunnier locations typically develop the brightest golden foliage color.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Golden Hinoki Cypress requires very little pruning and naturally develops an attractive pyramidal form. Remove dead, damaged, or stray branches as needed to maintain appearance and overall health.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring if desired to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage color. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION
Golden Hinoki Cypress is generally cold hardy throughout its recommended growing range and requires little winter protection once established. Applying mulch around the root zone can help moderate soil temperatures and retain moisture during winter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and plant so the top of the rootball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil, water deeply after planting, and apply mulch around the base while keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4–8

Golden Hinoki Cypress thrives in a wide range of temperate climates and performs especially well in areas with moderate summers and well-draining soil. Its golden foliage develops the richest color when grown in sunnier locations, though it benefits from some afternoon shade in hotter climates. This evergreen conifer is cold hardy and well suited for foundation plantings, specimen use, and ornamental landscapes throughout much of the United States.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
