The Globosa Blue Spruce Tree is a compact evergreen with striking silvery-blue needles and a unique globe-shaped canopy. Grafted onto a standard trunk, this tree form creates a sculptural focal point that adds year-round color and structure to the landscape. Its slow growth and manageable size make it ideal for small yards, entryways, and decorative plantings.

  • Botanical name: Picea pungens ‘Globosa’
  • Evergreen

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun.

WATER:
Water deeply once per week during establishment. Once established, water occasionally during extended dry periods. Frequency varies by soil conditions, rainfall, and climate.

IDEAL CLIMATE:

Note: The mature height of this tree depends on the grafted trunk height, while the globe-shaped canopy continues to slowly expand over time.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Globosa Blue Spruce Tree, scientifically known as Picea pungens ‘Globosa’ (tree form), is a compact evergreen prized for its striking silvery-blue needles and naturally rounded shape trained onto a standard trunk. This grafted form creates a small ornamental tree with a dense, globe-shaped canopy that adds year-round color and structure to the landscape. With its slow growth and manageable size, the Globosa Blue Spruce Tree is ideal for small yards, entryways, and decorative focal points.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Slow growth rate. Typically grows 3–6 inches per year and reaches 4–6 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide (canopy size) at maturity, depending on graft height.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once per week during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, this spruce is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. Watering needs vary depending on soil conditions, rainfall, and climate.

Globosa Blue Spruce grows best in full sun, which helps maintain its compact form and vibrant needle color.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Minimal pruning is required. Lightly prune to maintain shape or remove dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release evergreen fertilizer in early spring if needed to support healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
This tree is extremely cold hardy and generally requires no winter protection within its recommended zones.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the container so the tree sits at the same level it was growing previously. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm the soil to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 2-8

Globosa Blue Spruce grows well in USDA Zones 2–8 and is extremely cold hardy. It thrives in cooler climates but can also adapt to a range of conditions when planted in well-draining soil. This evergreen performs best in full sun and areas with good air circulation. It tolerates harsh winters, making it a great option for northern landscapes.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
