PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Flame Thrower® Redbud, scientifically known as Cercis canadensis ‘NC2016-2’, is a striking ornamental tree known for its continuously changing foliage colors. New leaves emerge deep burgundy-red before transitioning through shades of orange, yellow, and green, creating a multicolored canopy throughout the growing season. Combined with vibrant pink spring blooms and a compact growth habit, Flame Thrower® Redbud is a standout focal tree for residential landscapes and smaller yards.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Flame Thrower® Redbud typically grows 1–2 feet per year and reaches 15–20 feet tall and 15–18 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, Flame Thrower® Redbud benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Watering frequency will vary depending on climate, rainfall, sunlight exposure, and soil conditions.

Flame Thrower® Redbud grows best in full sun to partial sun, with more sun encouraging stronger foliage color.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter or immediately after flowering to remove dead or crossing branches and maintain structure. Minimal pruning is typically required.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release tree fertilizer in early spring if needed to support healthy growth and foliage color. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Flame Thrower® Redbud is cold hardy within its recommended zones. Applying 2–3 inches of mulch around the base can help protect roots and retain moisture, especially during temperature extremes.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun to partial sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the container. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

Flame Thrower® Redbud grows well in USDA Zones 5–9 and adapts to a wide range of climates. It performs best in locations with full sun to partial sun and well-draining soil. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade can help reduce stress, while cooler climates promote stronger foliage coloration.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
