PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Dense Spreading Yew, scientifically known as Taxus × media ‘Densiformis’, is a low-growing evergreen shrub prized for its dense spreading habit and soft dark green needles. This versatile yew provides year-round structure and color while tolerating pruning, shade, and cold climates exceptionally well. With its compact form and adaptability, Dense Spreading Yew is a popular choice for foundation plantings, borders, mass plantings, and evergreen landscape accents.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Slow to moderate growth rate. Dense Spreading Yew typically grows 6–12 inches per year and reaches 3–4 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice per week during establishment, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Once established, Dense Spreading Yew benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Watering frequency will vary depending on climate, soil type, and sunlight exposure.

Dense Spreading Yew grows best in full sun to partial shade, though it tolerates full shade very well.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter or early spring if shaping is desired. Dense Spreading Yew responds very well to pruning and can be maintained as a formal or natural-looking shrub.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced evergreen fertilizer in early spring if needed to support healthy foliage and growth. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Dense Spreading Yew is highly cold hardy and generally requires no winter protection once established. Applying 2–3 inches of mulch around the base can help protect roots and retain moisture.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with well-draining soil and full sun to shade exposure. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and about the same depth as the container. Place the shrub in the hole, backfill gently, and water thoroughly after planting. Apply mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-7

Dense Spreading Yew grows well in USDA Zones 4–7 and thrives in cooler climates with moderate summers. It performs well in both sun and shade and adapts to many residential landscape settings. This evergreen shrub is especially valued for its cold hardiness, pruning tolerance, and ability to provide year-round greenery.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
