David Austin® The Poet's Wife® Rose Tree combines the timeless beauty of an English rose with the elegant form of a rose tree. Its fully double golden-yellow blooms are produced repeatedly from late spring through fall and release an exceptionally rich fruity fragrance with fresh lemon notes. With its neatly rounded canopy, repeat blooms, and outstanding fragrance, it creates a beautiful focal point in both formal and cottage-style gardens.

  • Botanical name: Rosa 'Auswhirl'
  • Bloom time: Late spring through fall
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sun.

WATER
Water deeply at the base when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. During establishment, this is typically once or twice per week, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Once established, continue watering during dry periods. Watering frequency varies depending on climate, soil type, rainfall, sunlight exposure, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Hardy in USDA Zones 5–11. The Poet's Wife Rose Tree performs best in sunny locations with well-draining soil and is an excellent choice for formal gardens, cottage gardens, patios, entryways, and decorative landscape beds.

Note: The Poet's Wife Rose Tree is grafted onto a single trunk to create its elegant tree form. Occasional pruning helps maintain its rounded canopy and encourages abundant flowering throughout the growing season.

Removing spent blooms throughout the growing season encourages the tree to produce continuous flushes of flowers.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The David Austin® The Poet's Wife® Rose Tree, scientifically known as Rosa 'Auswhirl', is an elegant tree-form English rose celebrated for its richly fragrant, fully double golden-yellow blooms. Flowering repeatedly from late spring through fall, this stunning rose tree fills the garden with a strong fruity fragrance featuring notes of lemon. Its rounded canopy of lush blooms sits atop a straight trunk, creating a sophisticated focal point for entryways, patios, formal gardens, and landscape beds.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate-growing deciduous rose tree. Typically reaches approximately 6 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply at the base when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. During establishment, this is typically once or twice per week, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Once established, continue watering deeply as needed during hot, dry weather and while the tree is actively blooming. Watering frequency will vary depending on climate, soil type, rainfall, sunlight exposure, and the tree's establishment phase.

The Poet's Wife Rose Tree grows best in full sun. Provide at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for the healthiest growth, strongest flowering, and best fragrance.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins to maintain the rounded canopy and remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Deadheading spent blooms throughout the growing season encourages repeat flowering.

FERTILIZING
Feed with a balanced fertilizer formulated for roses beginning in early spring as new growth emerges and continue according to label directions throughout the growing season. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the tree to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION
In colder portions of its growing range, apply mulch around the base to help insulate the roots during winter. In areas with prolonged freezing temperatures, protecting the grafted portion of the tree can provide additional winter protection.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Plant The Poet's Wife Rose Tree in a location that receives full sun and has well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and no deeper than the rootball itself. Position the top of the rootball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil, backfill with native soil, water deeply after planting, and apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base while keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-11

The Poet's Wife Rose Tree thrives across a wide range of climates and performs best in full sun with well-draining soil. It appreciates consistent moisture, good air circulation, and routine care throughout the growing season. Hardy in USDA Zones 5–11, it produces repeat flushes of fragrant blooms from late spring until frost.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
