PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Cotton Candy Camellia, scientifically known as Camellia sasanqua ‘Cotton Candy’, is a fall-blooming evergreen shrub that produces soft, semi-double pastel pink flowers with a light fragrance. Blooming early in the season, it brings delicate color and elegance to shaded garden areas, borders, and foundation plantings. With its upright, compact growth habit and glossy dark green foliage, it’s a favorite for Southern gardens and low-maintenance landscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; reaches 6–8 ft tall and 4–6 ft wide at maturity

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Typically every 5–7 days during active growth and blooming seasons. Cotton Candy Camellia grows best with morning sun and afternoon shade or filtered light throughout the day. Avoid hot, direct afternoon sun in warmer climates to prevent leaf scorch.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering ends in late fall or early winter. Avoid pruning in late summer to protect flower buds.

Fertilization: Fertilize in spring with an acid-forming fertilizer after blooming ends. Repeat mid-season if needed, but avoid late-season feeding.

Winter Protection: Hardy in Zones 7–10. In colder areas of Zone 7, mulch heavily around the base and plant in a protected area to prevent bud damage from late frosts.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a partially shaded location with rich, acidic, well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide and slightly shallower than the root ball. Place the plant so the top of the root ball sits slightly above ground level, then backfill and water thoroughly. Apply mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk, to help conserve moisture and regulate temperature. Avoid planting too deeply, and choose a location sheltered from harsh winter winds if you’re in a cooler zone.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 7-10

Cotton Candy Camellia grows well in USDA Zones 7–10 and is perfectly suited to Southern and coastal climates where winters are mild and summers are long. It thrives in acidic, well-drained soil and partial shade, making it an excellent addition to woodland gardens or dappled light areas. In Zone 7, some protection from cold winter winds is helpful, especially during bud formation. Its early bloom time adds seasonal color when little else is flowering.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Cotton Candy Camellia typically reaches 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide at maturity. Its upright, softly rounded form makes it ideal for hedges, foundation plantings, or as a focal point in partially shaded gardens.

Camellia sasanqua cultivars like Cotton Candy grow at a moderate pace, usually adding 8 to 12 inches per year. With proper care, you can expect steady, manageable growth that fills in beautifully over time.

Plant your Cotton Candy Camellia in a spot with partial sun to dappled shade, ideally with morning sun and protection from harsh afternoon rays. It thrives in acidic, well-draining soil, and does best when planted in an area protected from strong winds. Perfect for USDA Zones 7–10.

For a dense, flowering evergreen hedge, space Cotton Candy Camellias about 4 to 6 feet apart on center. This allows their natural form to fill in while maintaining airflow and healthy growth.

To get more flowers from your Cotton Candy Camellia:
• Make sure it gets morning sun or bright filtered light
• Use an acid-loving fertilizer in spring and early summer
• Avoid heavy pruning after midsummer (buds form late summer)
• Keep soil moist but not soggy, especially in hot or dry conditions

These tips will support abundant blooms each fall.

Yes! Cotton Candy Camellia does well in large containers if cared for properly:
• Use a pot that’s at least 18 inches wide with good drainage
• Choose an acidic, well-draining soil mix designed for camellias or azaleas
• Place the container in a spot with morning sun or partial shade
• Water regularly and feed with an acid-loving fertilizer
• Protect from freezes in colder climates by moving to a sheltered area

Container-grown camellias offer flexibility for patios, porches, and courtyards.

Light pruning helps keep your Cotton Candy Camellia tidy and healthy:
• Prune right after it finishes blooming (usually in winter)
• Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches
• Shape as needed, but avoid over-pruning in summer, which may reduce flowering

You can train it into a tree form over time or keep it as a compact shrub.

Care is simple and rewarding:
• Light: Morning sun or partial shade
• Soil: Rich, acidic, and well-draining
• Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially in the first year or during drought
• Fertilizing: Use a slow-release acid-loving fertilizer in spring and midsummer
• Mulch: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to retain moisture and insulate roots

Camellias are low-maintenance once established and reward you with beautiful blooms.

In zones 7–10, Cotton Candy Camellia typically doesn’t need special winter protection once established. However:
• Mulch the base with 2–3 inches of organic material to insulate roots
• In areas with sudden cold snaps, cover young plants with a frost cloth during freezes
• For container-grown plants, move them to a sheltered area if temps drop below 20°F

Cotton Candy Camellia blooms in late fall to early winter, typically from October through December depending on your region. It produces soft pink, semi-double flowers with a delicate, ruffled look—bringing color and charm to the garden when little else is blooming.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
