PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Claudia Wannamaker Southern Magnolia, scientifically known as Magnolia grandiflora ‘Claudia Wannamaker’, is a stately evergreen tree celebrated for its large, fragrant, creamy-white blooms and glossy green leaves. This magnolia variety offers a faster growth rate than many other magnolias, making it a desirable choice for those looking to add classic Southern charm to their landscapes. With proper care—including ample sunlight and moderate watering—Claudia Wannamaker Southern Magnolia thrives in mild to warm climates, delivering year-round beauty and a memorable floral display.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast growth rate; it typically reaches a mature height of 40 to 50 feet and a width of 20 to 30 feet.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once or twice a week during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, this magnolia is moderately drought-tolerant, but it still benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Aim to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during extreme heat. Claudia Wannamaker Southern Magnolia thrives with bright sunlight and consistent moisture, particularly during establishment. Ensure it receives ample sun to encourage abundant blooms and healthy leaf growth. Water deeply during dry spells, allowing the soil to dry slightly between sessions to prevent overwatering, which can lead to root issues.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches. Minimal pruning is needed once the tree is established, as it naturally maintains a pleasing shape. Avoid heavy pruning that might remove developing flower buds.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper application rates.

Winter Protection: Within its recommended zones, Claudia Wannamaker Southern Magnolia typically requires no special winter protection. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and regulate temperatures, benefiting the root system in colder weather.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Select a site with well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade exposure. Dig a hole about twice the width of the root ball and just as deep. Gently place the tree into the hole so the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill with the excavated soil, firming gently to remove air pockets, and water thoroughly to settle the soil. Add a layer of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate temperature, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk to avoid rot. During the first growing season, water regularly and deeply to encourage a strong, healthy root system, gradually reducing frequency as the tree becomes established.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 7-9

This Southern Magnolia variety flourishes in USDA Hardiness Zones 7 through 9, which feature relatively mild winters and warm summers. Gardeners in these zones can expect the tree to maintain its evergreen foliage year-round, while producing large, fragrant blossoms during the warmer months. The plant adapts to various soil types, including loamy, sandy, or clay soils, provided they are well-drained.

Frequently Asked Questions

Claudia Wannamaker Magnolia can grow to be 40 to 50 feet tall and 25 to 35 feet wide at maturity. It has a dense, pyramidal shape with large, glossy green leaves and impressive white blooms, making it a standout in the landscape.

Its size and upright form make it ideal for large yards, privacy screening, or as a shade tree, but be sure to give it plenty of room to grow and spread over time.

Claudia Wannamaker Magnolia is considered a fast-growing variety of Southern Magnolia, especially compared to other cultivars. Under ideal conditions, it typically grows 1.5 to 2 feet per year.

With full sun, well-draining soil, and consistent watering, it can reach 40 to 50 feet tall within 20 to 30 years. Its relatively quick growth and upright, symmetrical form make it a popular choice for large shade trees, privacy screens, or ornamental focal points.

Claudia Wannamaker Magnolia should be planted 25 to 35 feet apart to allow for its mature spread, which can reach up to 35 feet wide.

For a natural, open look, give it the full 30-35 feet of spacing so each tree can grow to its full, pyramidal shape.

If you’re planting for a privacy screen or windbreak, you can space them a bit closer—around 20-25 feet apart—knowing the canopies will eventually touch.

Be sure to plant at least 15 feet away from buildings, driveways, or large structures to allow room for root growth and to avoid overcrowding as the tree matures.

The best place to plant Claudia Wannamaker Magnolia is in a sunny, spacious area with well-draining soil. Here’s what to consider:

Sunlight: Choose a spot with full sun to partial shade—at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best flowering and growth.

Soil: Prefers slightly acidic, well-draining soil. Avoid areas where water tends to pool, as soggy soil can cause root rot.

Space: Plant it where it has room to grow—this magnolia can reach 40-50 feet tall and 25-35 feet wide, so give it plenty of space away from structures, driveways, or other large trees.

Wind Protection: While it’s sturdy, planting in an area with some protection from strong winds can help prevent damage to its broad leaves and blooms.

It makes a great specimen tree in large yards or as a screen or privacy tree when planted in groups with proper spacing.

Claudia Wannamaker Magnolia typically blooms in late spring to early summer, usually from May through June, depending on your climate. You may also see occasional blooms later in the season, especially in warmer regions.

The tree produces large, fragrant, creamy white flowers that can be 8 to 12 inches wide, standing out beautifully against the dark green foliage. Blooms are not only showy but also attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.

You don’t need to prune Claudia Wannamaker Magnolia regularly, but occasional light pruning can help maintain its shape and health. Here’s when and how to prune:

Timing: Prune right after it finishes blooming—typically in late spring or early summer—so you don’t remove next year’s flower buds.

What to prune: Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and thin out dense areas to improve air circulation.

Shaping: If needed, lightly shape the canopy to keep a balanced look, but avoid heavy pruning. This magnolia naturally forms an attractive, symmetrical shape.

Avoid cutting into large limbs or doing aggressive pruning, as magnolias don’t heal as quickly and may respond poorly to major cuts. When in doubt, less is more.

Claudia Wannamaker Magnolia needs regular, deep watering, especially during its establishment phase. Here’s how to water based on its age and the season:

First 1-2 years (establishment phase):
Water deeply 3-4 times per week in hot weather, and 1-2 times per week in cooler seasons. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Slow, deep watering helps roots grow deep and strong.

Once established (after 2 years):
Water once a week in spring and fall, and every 4-5 days during summer heat, especially during dry spells. In winter, reduce to every 2-3 weeks or only as needed if rainfall is low.

Soil check:
Before watering, check the soil about 2-3 inches down. If it feels dry, it’s time to water. Mulching around the base (without touching the trunk) helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Consistent watering during dry periods will help this magnolia stay healthy and produce large, showy blooms.

Claudia Wannamaker Magnolia grows best in full sun to partial shade. Ideally, it should receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for strong growth and abundant flowering.

In full sun, you’ll get the best results—lush foliage, more blooms, and a fuller shape.

In partial shade, it will still grow well but may produce fewer flowers and a slightly looser form.

Avoid planting in full shade, as this can lead to sparse growth and reduced blooming. Choose a bright, open location for the healthiest and most vibrant tree.

Claudia Wannamaker Magnolia is moderately drought tolerant once established, but it performs best with regular deep watering, especially in hot or dry conditions.

Young trees need consistent moisture to establish strong roots—water deeply 1-2 times per week during the first couple of years.

Mature trees can handle periods of dryness, but extended drought may lead to stress, leaf drop, or fewer blooms.

Applying mulch around the base helps retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.

While it can tolerate short dry spells, it’s not as drought-hardy as some other landscape trees, so it benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.

Claudia Wannamaker Magnolia is generally cold-hardy in USDA Zones 6-10, but whether it needs winter protection depends on your local climate:

In Zones 7-10: No winter protection is usually needed. It can handle typical winters in these areas with little issue.

In Zone 6 or colder: Some winter protection is recommended, especially for young trees. Apply 2-3 inches of mulch around the base (keeping it a few inches away from the trunk) to insulate the roots, and avoid pruning in fall, as this can stimulate tender new growth vulnerable to frost.

During extreme cold snaps: For newly planted trees or unusually harsh weather, you can loosely wrap the trunk in burlap or frost cloth for extra protection.

Once established, this magnolia is fairly resilient, but a little protection in its early years can help ensure long-term health and growth.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
