The Chinese Chestnut Tree is a productive nut and shade tree known for its sweet, flavorful chestnuts, glossy green foliage, and broad, spreading canopy. Fragrant summer flowers develop into distinctive spiny burs containing edible chestnuts, while its adaptability and natural resistance to chestnut blight make it a popular choice for home orchards, edible landscapes, and larger properties.

  • Botanical name: Castanea mollissima
  • Bloom time: Late spring to early summer
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sunlight with at least 6–8 hours of direct sun per day.

WATER
Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all, so check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball and water when it feels dry. Water slowly and thoroughly, allowing moisture to penetrate the entire root ball and surrounding root zone rather than watering frequently and shallowly. For more in depth information, please see Watering and Sunlight section below.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Best suited for Zones 4–8. Chinese Chestnut Trees are adaptable to temperate climates with cold winters and warm growing seasons and perform best in sunny locations with well-draining soil. Once established, they tolerate summer heat and periods of drought relatively well, but consistent moisture during nut development can support better production.

Note: For chestnut production, you will need more than one genetically different chestnut tree. Chinese Chestnuts rely on cross-pollination, so planting at least two compatible trees with overlapping bloom periods nearby is important for reliable nut production.

We cannot guarantee the Chinese Chestnut Tree you receive will already be flowering or producing chestnuts. This depends on the season, tree maturity, pollination, climate, and overall growth pattern.

Chinese Chestnut Trees require cross-pollination from another genetically different, compatible chestnut tree for reliable nut production. Plant at least two different seedling trees or compatible chestnut cultivars with overlapping bloom periods within approximately 100 feet of one another to support effective wind pollination and a good chestnut crop.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Chinese Chestnut Tree, scientifically known as Castanea mollissima, is a productive shade and nut tree prized for its sweet, flavorful chestnuts and broad, spreading canopy. Glossy green foliage, fragrant summer flowers, and spiny burs filled with edible chestnuts provide multiple seasons of interest. Known for its adaptability and resistance to chestnut blight compared to American Chestnut, the Chinese Chestnut Tree is an excellent choice for home orchards, edible landscapes, and larger properties.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate. Reaches approximately 40–60 feet tall and 40–60 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all. Weather, soil type, drainage, plant size, and planting time all affect how quickly a plant dries out.

Use a slow-running hose, soaker hose, or drip system to water the root ball and surrounding root zone thoroughly. Allow the water to penetrate deeply (not just wet the top few inches of soil), and avoid frequent, shallow watering. Before watering again, check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball. If it feels dry, repeat this deep-watering process. If it feels moist or soggy, wait and check again in 1–2 days. Check the soil of newly planted trees and shrubs several times per week, especially during hot, dry, or windy weather. Irrigation run times will vary based on flow rate, soil, and system setup.

Chinese Chestnut Trees grow and produce nuts best in full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Choose an open location that provides abundant sunlight and enough space for the tree’s broad mature canopy.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Prune Chinese Chestnut Trees during dormancy to develop a strong central structure and remove dead, damaged, diseased, crossing, or poorly positioned branches. Avoid excessive pruning once the tree has developed its mature canopy.

FERTILIZING
Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Once established, fertilize in spring or early summer when needed based on tree growth and soil fertility. A balanced fertilizer can be used when necessary, but avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage overly vigorous foliage growth. Do not fertilize in fall or winter.

WINTER PROTECTION
Established Chinese Chestnut Trees are cold hardy throughout their recommended growing range and generally require little winter protection. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone to help regulate soil temperature and moisture, keeping the mulch several inches away from the trunk. Young trees may benefit from trunk protection in areas prone to sunscald or animal damage.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location for your Chinese Chestnut Tree that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day and provides plenty of space for its broad mature canopy. Select well-draining soil and avoid low areas where water remains after rainfall. Dig a planting hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Carefully remove the tree from its nursery container and loosen any circling or tightly bound roots. Position the tree so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill using the native soil removed from the planting hole without adding compost, peat moss, sand, rock, or other amendments directly to the hole. Gently firm the soil to remove large air pockets, then water slowly and deeply throughout the root ball and surrounding soil. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping it several inches away from the trunk. For nut production, space Chinese Chestnut Trees approximately 30–40 feet apart to provide adequate room for mature canopy development while keeping pollinating trees within effective range.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 4-8

Chinese Chestnut Trees grow well in USDA Zones 4–8 and are adapted to a broad range of temperate climates with cold winters and warm growing seasons. They perform best in full sun and deep, well-draining, slightly acidic soil and generally do not tolerate consistently wet or poorly drained conditions. Once established, Chinese Chestnuts have good heat and drought tolerance, although adequate moisture supports the best growth and nut production. Compared with American Chestnuts, Chinese Chestnuts are notably resistant to chestnut blight, although they are not completely immune.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Chinese Chestnut Tree typically reaches approximately 40–60 feet tall and 40–60 feet wide at maturity, developing a broad, spreading canopy. Mature size varies depending on climate, soil, moisture, pruning, and growing conditions.

Chinese Chestnut Trees have a moderate growth rate, typically growing approximately 12–24 inches per year under favorable growing conditions. Young, well-established trees may grow faster when provided with full sun, adequate moisture, and suitable soil.

Plant a Chinese Chestnut Tree in full sun with deep, well-draining soil and plenty of room for its mature canopy. Avoid consistently wet or poorly drained areas. If you’re growing the tree for chestnuts, choose a location with enough room to plant at least one genetically different compatible chestnut nearby for cross-pollination.

For home orchards and landscapes, spacing Chinese Chestnut Trees approximately 30–40 feet apart gives their broad canopies room to develop while keeping trees close enough for effective wind pollination. Avoid overcrowding, which can eventually reduce sunlight and airflow as the trees mature.

Chinese Chestnut Trees generally bloom in late spring to early summer, producing long, cream-colored catkins. Exact bloom timing varies depending on grow zone, local climate, and seasonal weather.

Yes. For reliable chestnut production, plant at least two genetically different, compatible chestnut trees with overlapping bloom periods. A single isolated Chinese Chestnut Tree should not be relied upon to produce a good nut crop.

For dependable pollination in a home orchard, planting compatible chestnut trees within approximately 100 feet of one another is a practical target. Because chestnuts are primarily wind-pollinated, keeping compatible trees relatively close improves the likelihood that pollen reaches receptive flowers.

Chinese Chestnut Trees may begin producing chestnuts approximately 3–7 years after planting, depending on whether the tree is seed-grown or grafted, its age when planted, pollination, climate, and growing conditions. Significant crops generally develop as the tree becomes more mature.

Chinese chestnuts generally mature in early to mid-fall, often from September into October depending on climate and location. The spiny burs begin to split open naturally when the nuts are mature, and ripe chestnuts typically fall to the ground rather than needing to be picked directly from the tree.

Chinese Chestnut Trees have strong natural resistance to chestnut blight, which is one reason the species is widely grown in the United States. Resistance does not mean complete immunity, but Chinese Chestnuts generally withstand the disease much better than American Chestnuts.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
