Planting instructions
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than the soil line. Set the Chanticleer Pear Tree in place so the top of the root ball sits slightly above the surrounding soil, then backfill with native soil and water thoroughly. Finish with a 2–3 inch layer of mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch away from direct contact with the trunk. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system.
Watering & sunlight
Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all. Weather, soil type, drainage, plant size, and planting time all affect how quickly a plant dries out.

Use a slow-running hose, soaker hose, or drip system to water the root ball and surrounding root zone thoroughly. Allow the water to penetrate deeply (not just wet the top few inches of soil), and avoid frequent, shallow watering.

Before watering again, check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball. If it feels dry, repeat this deep-watering process. If it feels moist or soggy, wait and check again in 1–2 days. Check the soil of newly planted trees and shrubs several times per week, especially during hot, dry, or windy weather.

Irrigation run times will vary based on flow rate, soil, and system setup.

Chanticleer Pear Trees grow best in full sun but tolerate partial shade with slightly lighter blooming. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight ensures stronger flowering and better fall color.
Care guide

PRUNING:
Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant, removing crossing, crowded, or weak branches. Light structural pruning helps maintain its upright form and long-term strength. Avoid heavy pruning in summer.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support strong growth and flowering. Mulch annually to help conserve moisture and enrich the soil naturally. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Chanticleer Pears are reliably hardy in Zones 5–8. Young trees benefit from a mulched root zone and protection from harsh winter winds. Avoid piling mulch against the trunk to prevent rot.

Answered by Simply Trees plant experts
How big does the Chanticleer Pear Tree get?
A Chanticleer Pear typically reaches 35–45 feet tall and 15–25 feet wide at maturity, forming a tall, narrow pyramidal shape.
How fast does the Chanticleer Pear grow?
The Chanticleer Pear Tree has a fast growth rate and can add 2–3 feet of height per year in ideal conditions.
Where is the best place to plant the Chanticleer Pear Tree?
Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-draining soil. Choose a spot where the tree has room to grow upward without interference from eaves, wires, or nearby trees.
What does the Chanticleer Pear look like throughout the year?
In spring, it produces clusters of bright white blossoms. Summer brings glossy green foliage, and fall displays vivid reds, oranges, and purples. The tree drops its leaves in winter and goes dormant until spring returns.
How far should I plant a Chanticleer Pear Tree from my house or structures?
Plant at least 15–20 feet from homes, garages, patios, or fences to allow proper canopy spread and root space.
How far apart should I plant multiple Chanticleer Pear Trees?
Space trees 20–25 feet apart to give each room to grow upright while maintaining good airflow between trunks and branches.
Does the Chanticleer Pear produce messy fruit?
No — Chanticleer Pears produce very little to no noticeable fruit. They are chosen specifically for their clean growth habit.
Is the Chanticleer Pear prone to disease or breakage like older pear varieties?
Chanticleer Pear Trees are much more resistant to fire blight and branch splitting than older ornamental pears. Their strong structure and upright form reduce storms or wind-related limb failure.
How much water does the Chanticleer Pear need?
Water deeply once per week during its first growing season. After establishment, water every 10–14 days, increasing frequency during hot or dry weather.
Is the Chanticleer Pear a good tree for small or narrow yards?
Yes — its narrow, upright growth habit makes it ideal for tight spaces, driveway borders, and street plantings where width is limited but height and color are desired.
